This "contest" is clearly a fraud when you have Guns n' Roses beating both The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin in a "classic rock" contest.

What is the point of this?
All of the above are great bands but are vastly different.
Rush is a prog-rock band and is/was very technical musically and lyrically cerebral. Many of their songs are over 15 minutes long with key-changes.
Van Halen is a party band and very FM radio friendly. Sure Eddie Van Halen is a great soloist that uses many chords foreign to rock music just as Alex Lifeson but other than that, they are far removed from each other.
I've never seen Geddy Lee flying in a harness dangling from a rope above the crowd.
Rush is in a class all by themselves.

   about the Led Zeppelin comparison.
Slash and that punk Axel Rose aren't even good enough to cut the grass and take out the garbage for Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page.
Led Zeppelin are Gods! Guns & Posers are trash!
Rolling Stones is just an over-rated simpleton rock band that gets praise for coming from the UK during the 1960s. The Beatles, Moody Blues, Yes, Genesis and even the Electric Light Orchestra are far more superior British bands that came out of the 1960s.
Rolling Stones is in the league with Cocoa Cola, Nike, Shell, Toyota, Microsoft, Apple, Heinz, Starbucks and other products. They're not a band, they're a 'brand' and honestly, I prefer to support and listen to KISS if I'm going to support a rock 'brand'. There is no false pretense about KISS unlike the Rolling Stones.
I get more bang for the buck with KISS unlike the Rolling Stones.
Now THAT'S a fair comparison.

Clearly the voters are biased towards stuff from the 80s, which IMHO isn't Classic Rock.

Led Zepplin is the penultimate band of the Classic Rock era, and progenitors of most of the much weaker later stuff that gets labelled as classic rock.

Another band that comes to mind is Cream. Although short lived, they along with Zep took blues-based hard rock to its peak, IMHO. I'd be thrilled to see something come along and top them, but I haven't.

I grew of age during VH's heydey and knew back then that it was least-common-denominator pablum with a glitzy stage show whose main goal was to pull dollars out of teenager's pockets as opposed to breaking any new ground musically.

Rush's first album came out in 1974 and they've been around ever since.
So wouldn't that fit in to classic rock?
Their first multi-platinum album was their 4th album 2112 which came out in 1976.
They're very much of the classic rock era. I know some text book classic rock 'academics' dismissed them as too new.
I remember when a 'classic rock' station came on air in Los Angeles in 1986 - KLSX, they refused to play Rush because they considered them "too new", yet they played Tom Petty and John Cougar Mellencamp and even Bryan Adams who were newer than Rush.

I'd add Yes to that list.

Have you listened to that first album?

It sounds like a Zep cover band to me.

I guess it's all what you were doing, and what was being played where you lived at the time.

My favorite Rush albums are A Farewell to Kings (1977) and Hemispheres (1978) but I didn't take any real notice of them till I heard Moving Pictures (1981) and then went through the back catalog and turned on to them.

I think part of the issue is by the early 80s tastes were turning to punk / new wave thus the end of the classic era.

Yes, I'm not sure why it took many of us several listens to turn on to them. Certainly after Moving Pictures you were a fan or not a fan, because that got played everywhere.

One progger I know still isn't a fan, she just never could get past Geddy Lee's voice, which she calls "screechy".

Actually one of my favorite things about Rush is Geddy Lee's bass playing. The boy ain't afraid to take the lead and run with it!

I tend to like bands with great bass players, like Rush (Geddy Lee), Yes (Chris Squires) and Gentle Giant (Phil Shulman).
