1/3 Of Chicago Firefighters Fight 5-11 Fire

Chicago Firefighters are fighting a huge, 5-11 fire in the Bridgeport neighborhood; according to The Chigago Tribune, the fire broke out in one of two empty warehouse buildings, sometime after 9 pm Tuesday night; They also report that one third of Chicago's on duty firefighters are battling the blaze.

God, I've fought fires in that kind of weather. One or two "through the roof", but nothing that big. The water spray freezes your gear as soon as you move away from the heat. Between the weight and rigidity, you can't move and you tire out quick.

I hope those guys keep it all in perspective and remember that nothing in that warehouse worth the life of a firefighter...or anyone else for that matter.

I was thinking the very same thing; ( my step son is a firefighter); I think what they're worrying about in Chicago is the thing spreading to other structures; it already "jumped" from the first warehouse to the second one; my wife was born and raised in Chicago, and she told me that all of the buildings in that area are over a hundred year old, wooden beam construction. it's sure bad to have to fight something like that in below zero weather. I didn't hear what the temp was in Chicago, but I'm near Terre Haute, 200 miles south, and it's zero here.

Exposure control is going to be a bitch if the buildings are close together. The cold weather (13 F) works in their favor and reduces radient (or is it infrared) heating, but in the cold, dense air, any embers will be playthings for the wind.

Bridgeport is an old industrial and working class neighborhood, so I imagine most of the buildings are older. Looking at the address on the internet there appear to be residential buildings across the street.

Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

I believe that was the old Speigel mail order companies warehouse. They went out of business about 20 years ago.
Bridgeport has gone through a bunch of renovation over the past 20 years or so. Old buildings and warehouses have been torn down and replaced with new housing for it's residents. And they even have a very nice (and large) Bridgeport Museum too.

The area is heavily populated with Irish-Americans and many of the residents work for the city of Chicago in the CFD or CPD positions. Bridgeport is also the area the original Mayor Daley and his son came from.

The Trib is saying the building that burned down was the former Harris-Marcus Group building, at 3757 S. Ashland Ave.
The CFD is saying that it was the biggest fire they've had in 7 years.

I didn't watch the video (thanks to my half-assed satellite internet connection) (grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!)

I just received this link from The Commodore in Australia; I've never copied a link from an IM before, so we'll see if it works; if it won't "work", try copying it and pasting it to your browser; he tells me it's a really neat video of the burned out building all covered in ice.

I've been trying all evening to find one in the Chicago newspapers with no luck, now we get one from Australia! (I hope it works)

I only saw the photo of the building burning and it looked like Spiegel's warehouse. But that's on 35th St. That's on the western edge of Bridgeport. But as stated earlier that area is full of warehouses and years ago used to be big in manufacturing as well.

On the corner of 34th & Racine there used to be a huge automotive store and warehouse that was once a brewery. Years ago a friend of mine had a summer job there. In the basement were tons and tons of new parts for Model A's, Model T's, all kinds of antique cars that the parts never sold, so they have been sitting on the shelves for 80 years or so. I visited the place with him one time and it was just massive. Five stories tall and 1/2 a city block in size. It was all filled with rows and rows of shelves and all the shelves on each floor was filled with auto/truck parts. But I looked at Google maps about a year ago and the building is now gone and new homes sit on that lot.

Tuesday, Jan. 29

Two new developments in the big Chicago warehouse fire from last week; it was burning again last night; a Fire Chief driving past at 9 PM Mon. evening noticed smoke, and a ladder truck was dispatched to the scene to deal with it;

Also; a local resident has just reported that the building isn't IN Bridgeport, it's IN McKinley Park.

It seems that the building's owners have hired a demolition company, and they have already commenced tearing the remaining structure down. That activity have caused some concerns by local residents that the arson squad has had insufficient time to complete a thorough investigation into the cause of the blaze.
