Self-gloss-I Am Transferring To Sophia Univ Japan!

Today is a great day to be PHX787 because PHX787 just learned he got accepted into the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia University, in Tokyo!

I am currently a Japanese Language student at Arizona State and have found my growth to not be proceeding in the direction I wanted to...so I am transferring to the school which I spent a summer at in 2011.

So come March there will be one more member reporting directly from Japan

If you don't know much about Sophia University, it's one of the top schools in Japan and it's very selective on getting in....so you can tell I'm quite elated right now.
If you saw the PHX Spotters page earlier I made a post.... I'm still gonna be contributing lots to the PHX thread here and will continue to be an admin on PHX Spotters.

See y'all in Tokyo

Come visit me sometime guys, and I'll take you spotting at HND or NRT

(excuse the self gloss of course)

Congratulations on being accepted to Sophia. It is always a good feeling to get accepted somewhere. Especially when it is something you really want.

I would imagine your Japanese language studies will be much better as you will be able to immerse yourself into the culture. Will that be your subject of choice there, or are you using the language studies for a hopping point to something else?

LOL! Well I love PHX and the 787 so I'm sticking with it. I'll be back frequently to PHX and my goal is to have the 787 begin regular service to PHX, thus my name   And when that happens, well then it makes even better sense!

K-pop sucks compared to J-pop bands.
Sadly K-pop has caught on here in Thailand instead of J-pop.

Especially since even in major cities, they have a much higher incidence of "Cash Only" policies than what Americans are used to.

What always drove me nuts there is that most of the ATMs are located inside the bank lobbies. So if you need cash after hours, you're probably boned...

Otherwise it's a neat place. One should just never ever admit it if they're an anime fan though, lol...

They do and it's an LAX-NRT route, soon to be the only route that SQ flies to LAX.   But hey, its an A380

I've been to NRT a number of times but I've never seen the SQ 380...maybe it's because it lands either in the morning or evening....

I was about to suggest a Citibank checking account linked to a debit card. When I first started going to Japan at 20 they didn't charge an extra % on top of the exchange rate, but they now charge a 3% foreign transaction fee (ATMs and debit/credit). Unless you have CitiGold, which is $30/month or $50,000 min. balance in a deposit account.

I do know Bank of America has/had? a relationship with Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ where you could use their cards in their ATMs, but I am unsure if they still do and what it costs.

Point is, if you have a card able to be used in a Japanese bank, I've never had a problem getting into the lobby to access the ATM.

Never stayed there more than a month, so I've never had a JPY account.

I hope to go there this year, March-April would be awesome for the sakura.

PHX787 would be better off flushing his money down the toilet than opening an account with those crooks. Those are the two worst banks with the most and highest fees. They charge you an arm & a leg for basic banking services. I can only imagine how high their fees are when it comes to international transactions. The only large bank I'd recommend would be Wells Fargo. Other than that, PHX787 would need to look in to opening a local bank account in Japan. Usually a work permit is required but since he is an exchange student, there may be a special arrangement he can make with a local bank.
I've closed my US bank accounts since I've moved here to Thailand and only deal with local Thai banks. The transaction fees were just ridiculous every time I dealt with my US bank account.

Hmmm, I'll have to research on that. I thought Oberlin was in Ohio unless they have a campus in Japan. I'll be using my Post 9-11 G.I. Bill which will pay the majority of my school cost, includes many Universities in Japan. Just hoping it will cover the monthly morgage as I plan on buying a house/apartment in the Kanto plain or Tohoku area(s) in the next 10 years.

Not sure when the last A.net meet was, but we attempted to start one up in spring 2011 but the majority canx due to the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake. If you go spotting at NRT/HND on any weekend, chances are you'll meet someone from A.net or have heard of this website. =D

I'm sorry I did not mean to say who is better and who is not. BTW Citibank charges me $0 for anything I've ever done over the past 4 years. I've had a very good relationship with Citi and a very bad one with BoA. But, I realize this is all individual. My banker at Citi is amazing, and if he weren't so, I probably wouldn't be there either.

The point is, find out what works for you, and value local relationships.

If you are staying there long enough, and especially if you speak passable Japanese... (I only speak a few phrases...) I would try to open a JPY dominated account in a local bank. Just so that you are not hit with foreign transaction fees all the time.

I wish I studied in Japan! OMG I am so excited, Sakura are going to be blossoming soon. And springtime is my favorite to visit Japan.
