So, I'm watching some college basketball on TV and I finally have to ask if this bugs anyone else besides me. Is anyone else annoyed that the size of the center court logo on the court is out of control?
On many courts it stretches from about 6-8 feet or so beyond the three point line across center court to the same point on the other side, which would make the logo about 30 feet long. It's not like you couldn't see it on TV or anything like that. Visibility from the nosebleed seats isn't a problem either, and I'm sure all of the fans in attendance know where they are anyway, so what's the point? This season I've finally started noticing it in more games than not and sometimes it can make the game more difficult to watch. It just bugs me. Have a tasteful, reasonably sized logo and leave it at that.
But, since I'm on the subject, 3D optical illusion the Toronto Raptors have on the baselines is seriously cool.

I forgot about theirs, you can hardly see the ball in that pic. It's an abomination.
I was just watching the Arkansas game, and theirs is bad too. The center court pig literally stretches from about three feet beyond one three point line to three feet outside the other. You only ever see the entire logo four a second or two, and sometimes not at all. But there is often a snout or tail jutting onto the screen. It would probably be more productive to have a smaller logo that's actually seen for longer on TV.
And the "Bud Walton Arena" lettering is literally never completely visible on TV, as it stretches from about even with the basket to nearly half court.
I'd put some guidelines in for arenas and universities for their floors. First, no logos or writing inside the three point arc. Second, center court logos can't get closer than 12 ft. to the three point lines, which for a college court would leave about 20 feet of logo space. And none of that crap like Oregon has. It's a cool effect, but at the end of the day you still have to play and watch basketball there and the trees are in the way.

It gets people talking. And noticing. And watching games. Georgia Tech? Yawn.... bland. tired. who cares? Logo covers the whole court? That sucks! Let's keep watching!!

Baseball. I hate baseball. I find I watch more highlights from stadiums that have patterns mowed in the infield than those who don't have anything in the infield.
Marketing.
South Carolina? Why do people wear their caps? They re-named themselves from "Gamecocks" to " 'Cocks". Marketing.

Who's tuning in that wouldn't otherwise if the logo were smaller? And if the goal is to get the logo on TV, what good is it for the entire logo to be flashed on the screen and seeing a fraction of it otherwise, versus seeing the whole thing for longer periods of time?

It's there, but often faint. The circle is really only important at the beginning of the game, so it's not a huge deal if it isn't that prominent.

In the lane, what is the arc for? In the boring Georgia Tech pic, between the ACC logo and the Yellowjackets wording out of bounds is an arc. What is that for? It would be under the basket somewhere.

Some of those are okay. I don't like The Citadel's that much. I can go for the painted lane and I can go for doing the arc in a slightly different wood, but the paint inside the arc is too much.
UNC is dumb for putting the state outline huge at center court. You can hardly tell what it is since it's so large and is almost never completely in the frame. It isn't even their logo, why not just put the NC there? Ohio State had something similar, and it looks like a giant birthmark.
NC State's is the best. The only change I'd make is moving the ACC logo out of the lane.

It marks out the restricted area. A defensive player cannot take a charge inside of that circle. It started in the NBA and the NCAA added it a few years ago. As far as I know, no high schools use it, although referees will rarely call a charge in what would be the restricted area, making it something of an unofficial rule.

It's a rule in the IHSA but like you said it's rarely ever used.
And okay, I like the Oregon floor in concept but it is just way too loud, the whole arena there was a bit of a big deal, I mean the most expensive arena in the country and it can only hold something like 12000 people? If you ask me I like the old school gym style arenas like you get in the small D-1 schools like Butler or something like that. Bare minimum because nothing more is needed.

Have any schools gone ahead and added the arc? It's kind of annoying that they have the rule but leave the exact area up to the referee's judgment. I've seen some rather ridiculous calls for defenders standing basically right under the basket.

That's probably the other idea: intimidate or confuse the opposing team.
I do agree that smaller arenas are better because of cost but also fewer fans screaming in a smaller setting is louder than a lot of fans in a big arena.

I LOVE basket ball ! I usually watch at LEAST 2 or 3 games every year; (usually the semi-final and the final; (in March) and then I'm so excited I don't even notice how they paint their floor ! ( which, if you stop to think about it, is the "operative word" here ).......as in, it's "their floor" ! You know, when it's "your floor", you can do any damned thing you want to with it ! Don't believe me ? We have "wall to wall" carpet in every room but the kitchen; I'm getting ready to rip it all up and have a huge bon-fire with it, down by the woods; then I'm going to do the whole damned house with 2 1/2 or 3 inch T and G quartered sycamore hard wood flooring; (knowing that I'll have to keep the stuff waxed myself) ! But hey........it's MY damned floor, right? I can do as I please with it !
BTW........I just happened to think about something.........hey......if you think those floors are "something", have you SEEN what some guy who owns a bowling alley did to his "lanes" ? I almost posted a picture of it, but you know me, I'm always "go along" to "get along"........never wanting to do or say anything that might "offend" anyone, (and you know how easily some people become offended now-a-days ! )
I'll search around and see if I can still find the pics of that bowling alley; maybe I might post after all ?
If I can find it, and if I do post it, maybe I''ll call it, "Has anyone seen that crazy bowling alley" ? That oughta be a good name for it. !

That's why you don't notice it: it isn't there. For tournaments (particularly big ones) the venues will have their own generic floor without gaudy logos, even if the venue is also home of a team. For instance, the floor the United Center has for the Big Ten tourney is not the Bulls' floor.
