That's right folks.

Snow. In Phoenix. Where, during the summer, it gets to 110 degrees plus.

Yesterday it was actually in the mid 60s and nice and sunny....

Now most of the white stuff that fell here was Graupel, a mix of snow, sleet, and hail....but even at ASU, I built a snowman....this is stuff that's quite unheard of here!

We got about 2 inches of graupel at my place in Gilbert, along with thunder and lightning. And this was after seeing the Superstitions white to the base earlier in the day.

Did you see KoryC's photo of the mountains from today? It's nuts!

Many deserts around the world get snow. Even places where the temps get even hotter than PHX in the summer.

The conditions that make a desert also make extreme high and extreme low temps possible.

PHX is at 33N, far from tropical zones.

Only those don't get snow at some point (not counting Hawaii - which does get snow and occasionally has snow skiing, but that is at elevations over 12,000 ft.)

Global Warming theory is that because the overall yearly average temps will rise, that unusual snaps of cold weather will be stronger and more likely to be damaging.

One of the key markers of global warming is not higher extreme temps but that the low temps at night are higher than they were in the past.

That the earth properly cools less often.

One of my former HS teachers posted up a pic of the Superstitions with snow almost down to the base. Something I never saw when I lived in Phoenix -- though a good winter storm would easily cover the top of 1/3 of the mountain.

And that has to be the smallest snowman (or the largest grass blades) I've ever seen.

Actually, the more likely explanation to yesterdays snow is that Mrs. Claus talked to Mother Nature to get Mr. Heatmiser to allow a warm day at the North Pole in exchange for Mr. Freezemiser making it snow in Phoenix. Geez, everyone knows THAT!

It's Snowmiser BTW.

I believe the last time the "inner" metro area had accumulation was in 1988. I've seen it snow in 1998 and 2008, but nothing that stuck.

Thank God I was at work and not on the roads. As bad as it is when it rains here, I can't image anyone being able to drive in snow/sleet/graupel/whatever.

You guys are being really silly, using this to refute Global Warming. There are more than obvious changes happening with weather patterns, open your eyes, look at news, read articles and don't join the ignorant bandwagon. What's more it is referred to as Climate Change. The earth is a very complex system and all systems tends towards equilibrium. So anthropogenic activities would only exacerbate those tendencies, and that is what we know as climate change. It would ignorant and fool hardy of you to negate the fact that anthropogenic activities are contributing to this change. What's more the build up of GHGs can even eventually induce a global cooling fenomenon, as some authors have argued, but don't expect the entire planet do reflect change the same way, as it is a very dynamic system. But I am sure you all knew that.

I wasn't refuting global warming...but then again I don't believe it's man made either

As an environmental scientist, I think it being man made is a strong expression. However the evidence suggests that human activities have contributed. You can think of it as an exacerbation of the normal warming-cooling cycle. I don't work with climate change because it is too political, and it is an exaggerated topic IMHO, nothing good can come of it as is. But it exists, albeit not exactly as portrayed. I decided to get involved with more immediate problems though, I work in noble area of soil pollution, where evidence is more tangible so to speak,
