The Ipad: I Finally Caved In...

.. and i've purchased my first Ipad. So far, I have avoided getting another portable device. As it is i already have 2 notebooks, 2 ipods, 2 mobile phones, so i decided i didnt need another 'thing' i had to carry around.

But I found a great price for one (ipad) with 16gb, smart cover and a dock station. I couldn't pass. I am loving it. Although I will still have to carry 2 mobile phones, and on occasion a notebook. But nevertheless, it was a good purchase and the cost benefit was worth it.

How many of you still haven't got an ipad? For what reason?
That's it. Cheers.

Me. I'm one of those people who refuse to become an Apple victim: I'm the proud owner of a Mk 2 I-pod, and that's it. I've no doubt the I-pad is a terrific, if overpriced, device, but apart from anything else, having been the victim of a minor break in recently where my laptop was stolen, I have no intention of providing the local low-life with high value gadgets.

So instead of replacing the laptop I bought a Prestigio (no, I hadn't heard of them either) tablet, which does everything I want it to do, at a third the price. And one of my mates, who owns an I-pad, reckons he'll probably go for one, or something similar, when he's due for a change.

I have an iPad and regret getting one. Not using it nearly as much as I intended, and something smaller and cheaper, like the Nexus 7 would have been sufficient. There are some benefits, most of which could be covered by the Nexus, and there is only one big thing I use the iPad for that the Nexus wouldn't do, and that is Airplay from spotify to the music system in the house. However, I could have invested in an Android solution to that, but opted for Apple TV to connect to the system due to me already having an iPad.

I've also moved mostly away from Apple to Android, and hence the iPad feels a bit backward to me.

In fact AppleTV airplay media player can stream to those apple devices, from an android device, for free.

I haven't bought an Ipad, they're nice, but I don't think I'd get too much use out of it, I bought an android tablet for $100 and it gets light use. I still prefer a laptop.

If and when I decide to purchase a tablet, it will be to effectively replace my laptop...So it has to be able to maintain just about the same level of productivity, the height of which is usually being able to seamlessly edit/copy/move/drag/paste items within spreadsheets. But until the iPad receives support for a mouse, I will never own one for this reason...and a stylus doesn't cut it. It's just designed too much for the casual email/book reader, internet surfer, "lite" games player types. So there will probably be an Android or Windows tablet in my near future.

I don't have one, but I did buy my wife one about 18 months ago. But then I bought her a new MacBook Air in December to replace the one our grandson spilled chocolate milk over.

Looking at my options, my next purchase is going to be a new iMac. The new beauty with a 27" display. It replaces a G5 20" iMac that was ordered on the day it was announced. Everything functions on it, but the new, larger jpeg files make it look like a half ton truck trying to move a 5 ton load up a steep hill.

My does, BTW, let me use her iPad whenever I want. I can even get over the pink cover - most of the time.

I'm with you. My wife and I use or iPad3 sometimes. But honestly, I prefer using my MacBook Pro for most things, and my phone for most other things. My wife uses her phone for most things, and her Toshiba laptop for remote login to work (requires Remote Desktop, so can't use VNC). We use the iPad for some things, but it is frankly too heavy to hold for any length of time, has too sharp an edge to rest on your body, and the covers all have sharp edges too.

We use the iPad because we have it and don't want to feel as if we wasted our money (but we kind of feel we did anyway), but if we didn't have the iPad, we would not miss it at all.

The iPad mini shape is far more ergonomic, and Apple is going to replace the iPad with one shaped like the mini, and hopefully lighter. But frankly, I wish I had the mini...

Wilco737, I'm right with ya.

I don't like Apple because of the companies attitude. They think they're god and all must pay penance to them. Sadly, a lot of sheeple listen!

As such, the iDevices are nothing for me. There are many cheaper options out there that do much more.
For instance, I have an Android tablet. It cost me £180 (well, cost Mother that, it was a Christmas present). It does everything the iPad does plus it supports flash, has a micro SD Card slot and HDMI port. The built in speaker sounds better and I get 12 hours of battery life running HD movies.

It weighs less than the iPad and comes with less garish accessories (which are also sensible priced).
Plus, GooglePlay is crammed full of quality apps, some even free. So that's one less thing Apple-Freaks can claim is an advantage

All round my tablet is a far better product than the iPads I've had a go of.

I don't buy all these new things because I don't need them.

We landed Men on the Moon and built Concorde we did not have mobile ph ones, iPads, iPods and all that. Not even personal computers even less the Internet and e-mails.

Still we accomplished the greatest things in the 1960's that were much more advanced than what we are doing now. The Soyuz technology dating from way back when is the only way we have to send humans to the International Space Station or to anywhere in Space for that fact.

These new gadgets can be useful but they are not in any way advanced. Our old tech was way more advanced than that.

So to answer your question - no iPad.

Don't need it - will not buy one just the same as I have not bought anything "Apple" other than old Beatles vinyls back in the days.

They make certain products and many people like those products, others don't. So what?

Calling other people names just because they disagree with your own preferences and priorities is just childish.

What "garish accessories" do you believe an iPad to come with? My iPad came with a white charger and a cable. That's it. I also bought a grey Smart Cover. If that's "garish" for you, you must have standards of dullness beyond my comprehension...  cool

Quoting garpd (Reply 12):

That there are free apps available at all is not a difference. The quality levels are rather different between the platforms, however, both among free and paid apps, among other reasons because of the mandatory quality control in the iOS App Store.

Quoting garpd (Reply 12):

Good for you if you feel that way.

For me personally the high-resolution display of the iPad 3 is the primary reason why I enjoy using it; A high level of security and quality all around (in hardware and software) is another reason for me.

Neither your nor my preference makes either of us "superior" or "inferior" as your harsh judgment above implies – at best it just makes both of us more satisfied and more relaxed to deal with the rest of our respective lives. Angrily attacking other people for making different choices is only a sure way to be and remain frustrated and distracted from better things.

Quoting MadameConcorde (Reply 13):

No, not remotely. In fact, space and aviation technology often explicitly uses less advanced technology because of higher resitance against cosmic radiation and for additional safety margins.

Highly advanced technology by definition is at the edge of what's technologically feasible, and advanced commercial products usually aren't radiation-hardened because you'd have to give up performance and efficiency for that.

Unmanned space vehicles also have become far more advanced than the relatively crude and ancient people transporters existing so far – which is mostly a function of the massive cost of developing and certifying manned space vehicles which has not seen sufficient funding since the end of the cold war on the one hand and a lively commercial and scientific payload launch market on the other.

If that's all it takes then why haven't they done so and sent Men on the Moon in the last 5 to 10 years?

Only because they can't - while in the 1960's they did it without any of the technology that exists today. no need for iPad and Apple

and Concorde was a real viable plane like it or not - the proof this they haven't been able to do another one the same and are still not capable of it - they reverted to mega-bus mass transport slow speed planes instead where passengers can spend countless hours with their Apple MacBooks, iPads and iPods.

If that was true they would still be flying, alas they are not! Douglas DC9's and American built plane, designed and produced in the 1960's still flying today!

The money is there. Billions. We had much less money back then than we have now. Much of it had been spent on WWII reconstruction and the Marshall Plan.

Only what I see now - right now, today - the launch of Space X Dragon to Space - will never equal what I saw in the 60s with the Saturn V rocket launchess and the Apollo missions.

A royal bore comparing with thrill and excitement and huge feats with Men on the Moon with much less technological means. I am happy to have witnessed all that from Day 1 of Space Flight with Yuri Gagarin and also the Sputnik.

No MacBooks or iPads or PC or mobile phones were necessary and they did it without all that.

Why do we need to go to the moon, we've already been, there was nothing their, no point in going again. Plus some of the reasons why NASA cancelled the program was due to the original mission (landing on the moon) was accomplished, priorities changed and money ran out.

No the money isn't there, have you forgotten about the GFC, I'd also imagine that the average American taxpayer would be pretty piss if the Govt gave NASA billions to go back to the moon when the deficit is huge and the country is in a bit of a financial pickle.

Because those in power get more political contributions by cutting the top tx rate (or adding yet more loopholes) than they do by maintaining a viable space program. Maybe one day we will pay Cuba to launch our satellites for us.
