Not only did the Bikini make it's debut on this day but it was also the day that Sun Records recorded the first Album by Elvis.

L-188,

You may not be aware but Elvis is top of the UK music charts at the moment with 'A Little Less Conversation'. The song was used in a TV ad and has been remixed. He's now had more number one's than any other artist(s) over here.

Does anyone know how the Bikini got its name. Also, what was it called before the Bikini?

The bikini was named after Bikini Atoll in the Pacific where the US was testing H-Bombs the week that wonderful piece of clothing debuted!

Tom

Yep, KAL_LM you're correct except it was atomic bombs, H-bombs didn't come around for a few more years.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Does anyone know what it was called before the bikini?

Also (for those technology geeks in the audience)--IBM (headed by Lou Gerstner) launched their hostile takeover of Lotus in 1995 on July 5. Many years prior, in 1951, the transistor was announced on the same day.
