Just in time for bird migration season, I scored a new (i.e.,factory-refurbished) digital camera straight from Sony's store on the eBay; it's a DSC-WX150, see, with 18.2 megapixels and takes 1080p hidef video; it cost me $129.99.
I've actually not even had time to take it out of the plastic wrap yet, but I did dig the instruction manual, whence I learned that the device is equipped with something called "TransferJet." I guess this means I can easily zap pictures & maybe even video (though from what I can tell I actually won't be able to record any video until I buy a 2GB memory card) directly to "other devices" that are equipped with TransferJet.
First question is, is there anything to recommend this TransferJet as something worth bothering with? (I really only recognize either of two forms of data transfer in this world: The United States Postal Service and AppleTalk.)
But if the TransferJet is worth bothering with, what other types of devices are equipped with it? I'm in the market for a new laptop (i.e. new to me, but scored cheap on the eBay), are there ones with T-J built-in? Can I buy a USB- or (heh)PCMCIA-compatible TransferJet card for my current, aged laptops? And what would be the advantage of any of this when the camera is of course USB-equipped.
Are ther any T-J-equipped smartphones? I don't have a smartphone yet but when that time comes I do like the idea of being able to upload higher-def photos to Facebook than the phone's built-in camera is likely capable of. TransferJet from the CyberShot into the phone, and up it goes, no?
One more thing, how long is TransferJet going to be around? Infrared was the buzz in the early 90's, FireWire was later where it was at, and then... Now I think FireWire might get edged out by Apple/Intel's "Thunderbolt" ... how many protocols/interfaces do WE NEED??!?
protocols... connectors... buses... interfaces... whatever happened to pen and pencil...

The deafening silence here might not necessary speak to the triumph of the pen and pencil, but it does suggest that TransferJet is actually more of a TransferSingle-engine-Piper at this point...
But hey, digital shutterbugs - how DO you usually move pictures from camera to computer? How very new I am to digital camera ownerhood. My options seem to be either T-J or USB cable; and the thought of not putzing around with a cable is very appealing to me. Do you usually use the cable? I believe in the past that a lot of digital cameras were equipped with IrDA ports so the pix could be uploaded to an IrDA-equipped laptop. I guess maybe as cameras got more megapixels and the files got bigger, IrDA just got to be insufficient, bandwidth-wise, eh? (If so, then is the same true, bandwidth-wise, about the Bluetooth?)
Wires or no wires, I can't wait to start snapping & sharing some pics of my avian visitors once I get that seed bell strung up.
