It looks like it is official, Alex Trebek intends on retiring from Jeopardy! when his contract expires in 2016:

Rumored as a replacement is Matt Lauer. I personally would prefer Richard Karn, though.

Jeopardy needs someone who's urbane and intelligent for its host. Richard Karn is neither. Matt Lauer might be an interesting choice, especially if rumors of his departing the Today Show are true.

Sorry, not this show.

Matt Lauer

I don't know if ML has displayed enough intelligence. Trebek is smart, he shows that on the show. Witty too.

My day just got a little sadder. Of course, I know he's getting up there, but it's tough for me to picture Jeopardy! without him (yes, I know he wasn't the first host).

Gotta imagine Johnny Gilbert will be retiring as well - the guy's freaking 88 years old already!

As for a new host, I vote for Will Ferrell.

I spoke to Alex Trebek years ago when I worked at a call center when I was in college. He had questions about his mortgage for his place in New York.

Sorry to hear of his retirement but we still have 3 more years of his stay on Jeopardy.

Agreed and I hope they stick with an older mature host.
I'll be pissed if they try to go young & hip!

He'd never go for it, but I'd LOVE to see Patrick Stewart take over as host.

Interesting that this topic came up here. I ran into Ken Jennings at a park in Seattle yesterday while I was out with my kid. Nice guy, he actually might be a good person to take over the show.

I'd never watch the show again if Matt Lauer was host. Please God no.

I've never liked Trebek. He's very smug on camera. I remember an exchange with a contestant years ago where she said she'd "bet" some amount of money on a daily double and he said "we wager, not bet".

Meanwhile Betty White is still going strong and has no plans to retire any time soon! At 72 he's young enough to be her son.

He's the only host we know, a lot of Jeopardy! viewers don't remember the Art Fleming days.

Hey, you never know - he's on American Dad, and sometimes on Family Guy......

That would be freaking awesome!

Looks like it's possible. Apparently NBC has been talking to Anderson Cooper about possibly replacing Matt Lauer on the Today show.

Actually, I'd rather see Coop host Jeopardy!!

Ya know who'd be the best Trebekoid in my opinion, is Kelsey Grammer.

Jeff Probst maybe another choice. He hosted VH1's Rock and Roll Jeopardy. While his talk show has been canceled due to low ratings, Survivor has been renewed, so he'll still remain relevant. And CBS is involved in both Survivor and Jeopardy, although Survivor by the network and Jeopardy by CBS Television Distribution (syndicated).

If he leaves in 2016, I'm thinking the show will be history by 2020. I just can't think of a viable replacement. Alex IS the show.

If not, it will at least go the way of The Price is Right in that nobody seems to care now that Bob is gone.

I guess I'm really out of the loop. I thought Alex had already retired and has just been doing insurance commercials. Matt Lauer? There's a "no buy". What a smarmy insufferable ass. Who watches this stuff anyway? The real housewives of Zug Island, Michigan? regards...jack
