My hands were all shaky,
My face had gone pale.
A letter from Wash
Just arrived in the mail!

It was hand-written
In old-fashioned ink pen.
It was handsomely printed
And dated March ten.

“Dear Patrick,” it said,
“I’m writing to you
Because I hear tell
You’re a ballplayer too.”

“So make your way back
To the ballpark, post haste!
And start laying the AL West’s
Pitching to waste.”

“Double off King Felix!
Homer off Weaver!
For as you say, he ain’t
Near good as Seaver”

“Argue with umpires!
Steal second base!
Slide through the dirt
Then brush it off your face!”

“Drive the ball to right,
Hit with power to the gap!
If the pitcher trash talks you
Then trash talk him back”

“Go on now, you’re up!
Step into the box
Hit it over the fences
Or at least draw a walk!”

“You’ll hit .400,
Now go do as I spoke
Sincerely, signed Wash.”
...And then I awoke.

I wish I played shortstop
(or at least that I could fake it).
Four days until baseball!
I don’t think I’ll make it.

Tampa

I'm extremely excited for the season this year. My Yankees aren't looking the best, but miracles do happen. My buddy and I decided to grab some tickets for opening day at Target Field in MSP on Monday. Going to be cold, but totally worth it!

Ron Washington is such a poor substitute for Santa (though both have been known to have white stuff around their mouths, so that's something    ). Well done on the poem, though.

But you're delusional if you think the Rangers are better than the Angels over a 162-game season. They may make the wild card game, but barring a Rangers-style collapse by the Angels, they're not winning that division.

People are selling the Yankees short. No, they're not as good as they've been in the past, but they still have good starting pitching and an elite bullpen. And while a lot of their big hitters will be starting the season on the DL, those guys will come back (except A-Rod, who should stay away). They might not be good enough to win the division now that Toronto has really beefed itself up, but they're good enough to be one of the five teams in October, and then anything can happen. Hell, the offense can't be any worse than it was last October.

I haven't watched baseball consistently in 10 years, yet oddly, this year I'm rather excited about the season. I really don't know what it is that's got me worked up.

I've already got tickets to watch the Reds beat up on the Cubs during the Memorial Day Weekend. Not really a fan of either team (Yankee fan from way back), but decided to go to a nearby game.

I think I'm going to take the kids to more minor league games this year and see if I can get them excited about baseball.

Thanks! And glad you caught the inspiration for the poem

I think the Rangers have better pitching and defense than the Angels. And they'll still hit, even without Josh. I think it'll be close and that the Rangers win by 1.5 games.

Never underestimate the Yankees. As you say, still have good pitching and they'll at least hang tough. If they make it to mid-May at least a few games over .500, they'll be dangerous the rest of the way--half of their offense comes back around mid-May.

Does this mean you are going to swing through North Texas to catch a game?

Let's see how many games he actually plays this season, might surprise us and be healthy all season. Certainly does not know how to thank a team that pulled him out of his drug-induced pit and provided baby-sitters to assure he would not slip back.

The Mets luck continues to be bad.

It looks like Johan Santana's season is over before it even starts. He re-tore the anterior capsule in his left shoulder. He missed the entire 2011 season because of the same injury. I think it's time for him to retire.

I can,t remember the reporter last year that said :the Angels are the first team with too many good players." Was it Rosenthal? Anyway don't forget who was the beginning of that Ranger meltdown last year. Yep Hambone, bu dropping a fly ball with two outs against the Angels that open them up for that two out rally that the Rangers couldn't come back from. The Angels are in a win it all now mode instead of slow and steady. The Rangers have proven that they are a for real good team to not be underestimated. The Angels have not proven themselves yet. They look good on paper is all. I will never count the Yankees out, but the odds are stacked against them.

Well fellas Opening Day is here. My Yankees suffered an embarrassing lost. I made my way over to Target Field today to watch the Twins and Detroit in action. Was it ever chilly! 34F at first pitch. Windy as all get out as well. Only made it 5 innings before calling it a game and heading back up to school. It was amazing to finally get to check it out, even if the twins weren't playing so well. Though one has to ask, who decided to build a stadium in Minnesota without a retractable roof!
Go Yanks!
