Though this has been planned for months, the timing is unfortunate.
I'm very glad there hasn't been a knee-jerk reaction to cancel this.

Timeline 7:00 a.m. Parking gate opens
Entrance is off of Hillsborough Avenue; take Hoover Blvd. South. Follow the signs.
Free parking.
8:30 a.m. Race starts
9:30 a.m. Race conclusion
Sorry folks, but anyone not in after one hour will be picked up in a courtesy vehicle and brought back to the finish line. We need to get the runway back into operation!

Enjoy the festivities; static displays and games for the kids.

11:00 a.m. Event concludes

Just to clarify....a 5K is not a marathon. 3.1 miles vs. 26.2. But this is super fun! I wish these airport runway runs would band together in an organized race series to get more participation. I did one at at JFK this past Sunday and another at ATL on 10/28 back in 2006. Super fun!!

Didn't O'Hare also do one recently? I think I remember being interested in doing that one, had I been in Chicago at the right time. Or perhaps I'm making it up.

I wish MCI would do one.

LGA had one a while back. I finished in 1:03 (I walked the whole route)

Is there a map of the TPA course anywhere?

ORD had a 5K in October. They closed 9L/27R and it open to runners and walkers. It was a lot of fun and well put together. I wonder which runway they'll use at TPA?

According to the website
Race Course: Runway 1L/19R: The perfect platform for first timers and experienced athletes to reach their personal bests. 5K of wide open runway!

Guess I should have actually opened the website, woops! At ORD, we only ran about half the runway, the rest was on the taxiways. Should be interesting to see what kind of route they have at TPA. 1L is 11,000 feet so that's over half of the 5K.

This is a MUST do for spotters and airline nuts! I did it this past October in Charlotte. The start point was at the US Airways hanger. The course followed a taxiway then onto Runway 5/23, past a US 757 parked on the runway. From there, we made a right and ran the cargo parking apron along Runway 18L/36R until exiting the airport grounds.

We had one at Orlando Executive a couple weeks ago. It didn't really affect our operation - they used part of our rarely used crosswind runway, a couple taxiways that didn't affect taxiing aircraft and some FBO ramp space - it was over in less than an hour and I had all runways and taxiways open within a half an hour

I am actually a 5k runner, and definitely love TPA so I at least will give this a thought. A problem I might encounter would be distractions...lol I would imagine running on flat concrete is not bad, especially in long straight aways. Nice knowing someone has done it before on a runway, and enjoyed it.

I did the ATL 10/28 back then as well. IIRC, the winning time of that 5k was 14:00. My time was 20:40.

I've done 3 or 4 TEB 5ks as well.

If this (TPA) race notice wasn't so short (date 4/27) and I wasn't still trying to rebuild back up from a hamstring tendon tear injury (from late Oct. 2011); I'd definitely do this race. I'd fly down overnight (likely on WN) and fly back later that day following the race.

This year's race is scheduled for Oct. 26 (the 2nd anniversary of my injury); depending on my buildback (at present, I have trouble running a mile-and-a-half without stopping), I might be able to head out and do that one. Although, I will have to book a flight w/a connection because a r/t PHL-CLT nonstop on US w/no Saturday night stay's going to be very expensive.

JFK had one last Saturday or Sunday. Would be a ton of fun to do.
