Osaka Mayor: GIs Should Use Prostitutes More

It'll cut down on rapes!

Quote:

Toru Hashimoto, the young, brash mayor of Osaka who is co-leader of an emerging conservative political party, also said that U.S. troops currently based in southern Japan should patronize the local sex industry more to help reduce rapes and other assaults.

If this wasn't enough fuel for the fire:

Quote:

An outspoken nationalist mayor said the Japanese military's forced prostitution of Asian women before and during World War II was necessary to "maintain discipline" in the ranks and provide rest for soldiers who risked their lives in battle.

...

"To maintain discipline in the military, it must have been necessary at that time," Hashimoto said. "For soldiers who risked their lives in circumstances where bullets are flying around like rain and wind, if you want them to get some rest, a comfort women system was necessary. That's clear to anyone."

Talking about dancing on the third rail!

Forced sex IS rape. None of the 200,000 sex slaves volunteered for the brothel gig. Mr. Mayor should know that.

Forcing women to provide sex services by the barrel of a gun is rape. That's clear to anyone. Ugh.

These attitudes are not uncommon here, unfortunately. The older generation of Japanese men in particular believe that sex is the most natural stress reliever and is not wrong if sought out for that purpose. A lot of women here accept this as a fact of life and thus look the other way with a "see no evil" attitude, even in their marriages. This is pretty different from the western idea of negotiating boundaries in a relationship.

Things have changed a lot the last 20-30 years due to the influence of Hollywood movies and American TV, but the "facts of life" cold logic still pervades a lot of people's thinking here. However logical it may be, it still belies the fact that people have feelings, and rights, you know, the stuff that separates us from animals.

Why? I'm a handsome man. I don't need to pay for it. Besides, even ugly dudes manage to get laid. We're all guys and we're all horny pretty much all the time. Most of us are willing to have sex and leave it at that. "Thanks, man. That was fun."

And lest you judge us, do you know how many straight friends I have who *WISH* it were that way for them?

Depends who you ask. Younger Japanese tend to have more western relationship ideals, but I don't think it always fits the cultural context. Nevertheless, divorce rates are higher than they've ever been here. 30 years ago, a husband or wife wouldn't think of divorce here if their spouse were rampantly playing around, where as now they usually will.

Appears that Superfly has the same luck with women, that is if we believe him. Really it depends on the quality of women you are after (Fly appears to aim low and fat, which imporves his odds), if you're not picky you could get laid every night of the week, just like a gay dude.

It's not all that unusual to have a word-I-can't-type-here buddy or two available, or know where to go when you're out of town. Pickiness about venue can also play a part in the success rate.

That said, if I had someone who was calling me his husband, I'm not sure how I'd take him bragging on the interwebs about how he's pretty enough to be out there having indiscriminate sex at the snap of his fingers.

Funnily enough I never really thought gay men (even married ones) being faithfull to their partners, hence the reason I didn't even think about that comment, as I assumed Doc (and hubby) was putting it out there for anyone to have a go on.

In my experience, it's the norm, not the exception. If there isn't some agreement about sex outside the partnership, or grabbing someone for a three-way, cheating is usually the first sign that the coupling is in peril, just like for straights.

From the outside looking in, perhaps so. In some ways their approach to sexuality is refreshing all the same - being that this is a shame-based culture, rather than a guilt-based culture. The live-and-let-live attitude that people are entitled to their fantasies and interests is pretty healthy IMO. Of course the danger there is that some people cannot keep themselves behind the line between fantasy and reality, but that happens everywhere anyway.

There is more to love and marriage than sex, and more to faithfulness than sex.

Anyway, I won't go into details about my marriage. But recall that I was single a long time before I wasn't.

Young women who work in soaplands often just give the owner a cut of the room they "rent" and whatever happens inside nobody is the wiser.

Two things which shouldn´t be mixed up:

1) The "comfort women" in the Japanese WW2 brothels were there against their will. They were forced to become prostitutes, which is completely inacceptable. So this mayor should rather wind his neck in.

2) Prostitution with voluntary prostitutes based on consent:
It seems that in Anglesaxon countries soldiers are expected to behave like choir boys. Even the US Army cartoonist Bill Mauldin (who served in Italy), wrote in his book "Up Front" about the differeing attitudes towards alcohol between the European military of the time, where official alcohol rations were handed out (and drinking permitted as long as it didn´t affect the soldier´s duty) and the US Army, who´se soldiers were supposed to be dry. According to Bill Mauldin the GIs would go on violent binge drinking sprees if they got their hands on alcohol and then cause real trouble.

Similarly the US Army handed out condoms, but had to assure the civilians back home that they were not intended for sex, but only to protect the rifle muzzles when getting off a landing craft.
Contrast this with the British field marshall Montgommery, who had no problem with his soldiers using (legal) brothels, but made contracting a STD a military offense, since this then would affect the soldier´s performance on duty.
Most soldiers ARE young men full of testosterone and correspondingly always horny.
It is absolutely irrational to expect them to act like monks. So, instead of banning visits to consentual prostitutes, the army should turn a blind eye.
And there are enough women around, who would open their legs if the the price is right.

Agreed.
One of the things I like about Japan is that it's a 1st world developed country yet so different and far removed from Europe, US, Australia/Oz. I hope it stays that way.
Part of the beauty and mystery of Japan is that it is so different and non-conformist to the rest of the world. They beat to the beat of their own drum. I wish more countries were like that to be honest.

That is true. That crazy man in Cleveland that had those women held captive is a perfect example.

Quoting Aesma (Reply 17):

How is that any different than nurse uniform, cheerleader uniform, police officer uniform, fire-fighter uniform, military uniform, etc.? Some people have a uniform fetish. Many women especially get turned on by men in uniform. Chicks love guys in military uniform, police officers, firemen and even airline pilots.
Then you have guys that are in to leather and @ssless chaps, leather vest as well as wearing diapers. My old roommate's ex-wife was in to dressing up as a baby and wearing diapers. Seemed really strange to me but they were both happy and having a good time.
In Germany, fecal porn is somewhat popular. I can't get in to smearing of bodily waste that smells awful.
Russian porn often involves a naked lady standing outside in the snow.
Different strokes for different folks.

Some sort of back and forth going on right now between the Osaka mayor and the US:

"Osaka’s abrasive mayor on Friday hit back at US criticism of his remarks on wartime sex slavery, claiming American troops abused Japanese women during their seven-year occupation.

Washington denounced as “outrageous” comments earlier this week by Toru Hashimoto, who said “comfort women” forced to provide sex to Japanese troops during the second world war were a military necessity."

Ah, the old "don't say bad things about us because you did bad things yourself" approach... Classy. Sorry, but the systematic enslavement of their own women to Japanese Army units for the sole purpose of providing "comfort" can't be compared to what the American occupiers may have done...

The sad truth may be that the Japanese do not see anything wrong with that (and the wars as a whole), let alone "making foreign women do it", which to them, perhaps makes no difference.

Don't take the statement of one nationalist pig as the general concensus on anything among the Japanese. Most Japanese see these political squabbles as troublesome, and would prefer they are never mentioned anywhere by anyone.

Ironically I have never flown a Delta MD-90 :)

Not really. Virtually all Japanese of every political stripe support the deep connections between corporations and the government.

Right-wing Japanese are typically opposed to foreign involvement in any Japanese affairs, resent US policies, want higher restrictions on immigrants to Japan, have a warped revisionist view of 20th century Japanese history, deny the sovereign cultural identities of Ryukyu islanders and Ainu peoples as distinct groups separate from Japanese, oppose expanding womens' roles in the workplace and government, and just about every other stupid idea you can think of.

The only common point is they seem to have the same brand of nothing non-Japanese is better than our stuff "we are exceptional in the world" mentality that right-wing Americans exhibit.

Being a right winger in the US is unlike anywhere else in the world.

The so called 'conservative party' is anything but. With it's extreme views on guns and religion corrupted by unlimited
contributions from these wacko's it has become the party of hate and intolerance.

Even the smiling bimbo's on Fox can't disguise this any more !

The best contribution to safety is a competent Pilot.
