A great day for American soccer. The problem is that there is no soccer specific stadium available at the moment. The NY Yankees do have the capability to convert their stadium for soccer matches but that is not an ideal solution. The losers will be the existing NY franchise who are disgustingly named after an energy drink. ( Hint: their logo is a bull painted red)

The issue regarding a stadium in Flushing meadows park is also contentious because of the parkland that will be razed to make way for the private facility. Hopefully the Yankees will use their clout with City Hall to help push through the approval process for the new stadium.

I'm rather surprised that they decided to put a second team in New York rather than grow the sport elsewhere, like Pheonix, Las Vegas, Miami, etc. It's hard to justify a second franchise in the same geographical area when the first team doesn't even sellout any of their games...

Why do all soccer fans think that every single team should be called "[City Name] F.C."? New York Red Bull easily has the most original name in the league (other than maybe Vancouver or Portland), and they're associated with a brand that sponsors awesome sporting events around the world.

Flying refined.

Just keep spending money! It's just like countries? Operating loss, let's spend more money! (actually companies and people do this too).

Well Man City is owned by an UAE businessman, they do tend to spend money profusely.

Although the UAE is not as hostile as to Israel as many of it's 'neighbors in the Middle East, his ownership could cause some hassles for a team owned by him to be in heavily Jewish and pro-Israel NY City and the metro area. I would prefer that a new stadium is not build due to the scam on taxpayers it end up being.

As long as they do not say anything stupid or political they should be fine. The UAE is about as liberal and progressive as the middle east is going to get. Rich arab owners have completely changed the landscape of football in Europe. In the US if you want to watch a La Liga, Serie A or Ligue 1 match you have to get the BeIN sport network which is an affiliate of Al Jazeera Media Networks. BTW don't be surprised if they make a move for EPL TV rights at some point in the future...

The real issue is that most New Yorkers care little about soccer and those that do only watch the EPL and Champions League matches......

I would say MLS has about as distinct names as European teams do.

Yes there are the Real Salt Lakes, D.C. Uniteds and Toronto F.Cs. But there are also Columbus Crew, Houston Dynamo, LA Galaxy....No team in Europe has a name other than their location that I can think of. Maybe Espanyol but that's the only one off the top of my head (it's early yet)

I happen to think this could be a VERY interesting move. The NYY have a very strong brand presence in New York City. Football is the fastest growing sport in the U.S, especially among the 12-24 age group. The stadium will be close to ethnic populations, and this is the first major scale investment in MLS since David Beckham, and he DID draw people to stadiums. This is going to be interesting. Like most I watch mostly European football but this draws me in a bit closer to MLS.

Ajax, Feyenoord*, PSV, Vitesse, Willem II... and that's just looking at the Dutch eredivisie. Internationally the city may be added to the name (Ajax Amsterdam, PSV Eindhoven, etc), but that's not done locally.

* Admittedly Feyenoord is a grey area. It's not named after the city, but after a city-district.

Sometimes adding a second team can boost attendance for both, as local rivalry sparks interest. However, I am not entirely convinced the NY market will do this.

David Beckham has first dibs on the Miami franchise as per his contract with the LA Galaxy.

And considering how big the South American population is here, I think a second team could do well. Especially in Queens.
