An interesting summation from last week by the guy who broke the Snoden story:

James Clapper, EU play-acting, and political priorities

In case anyone's paying attention, some of his opinions with a few of my own mixed in:

 • The NSA is sprawling and unaccountable
 • DNI James Clapper has admitted his statements to Congress were "clearly erroneous" but hasn't suffered any consequences for misleading Congress
 • Roger Clemens took more Congressional heat for taking a few shots of steriods to the bum than has Clapper
 • We haven't even had a public hearing on Clapper's "clearly erroneous" statements!
 • Yet we are supposed to trust that Congress is providing oversight to the NSA?
 • The Guardian has published documents disproving "the claims of NSA Director Gen. Keith Alexander that the agency is incapable of stating how many Americans are having their calls and emails invaded without warrants"
 • The Guardian has published documents disproving oft-repeated claim from President Barack Obama that the NSA is not listening in on Americans' calls without warrants
 • Senators Wyden and Udall wrote a letter to the NSA identifying "multiple inaccuracies in their public claims about their domestic spying activities" and haven't gotten a response
 • Obama has labelled Snowden a "29 year old hacker" when he didn't hack at all, he just used used priviledges that were willingly delegated to him by the NSA through Booz Allen to reveal the things that the NSA was doing
 • The Administration is focusing on Snowen's "tone and choice of asylum providers" rather than the misconduct and deceit of Clapper and Alexander
 • The German government has "led the ritualistic condemnations of NSA spying that Snowden exposed - summarily rejected Snowden's application for asylum almost as soon as it hit their desks"
 • Spain and Portugal denied overflight rights to Morales but they "were among the nations who participated in various ways in rendition flights - ie kidnapping - by the US"
 • "All of this smacks of exactly the kind of rank imperialism and colonialism that infuriates most of Latin America, and further exposes the emptiness of American and western European lectures about the sacred rule of law"

Kind of hard to preach to the world about rule of law when you aren't capable of following your own laws, issnit?

No one cares, because the United States "can do no wrong". When you have that kind of implicit support, you have absolute power and you can do anything. It already is too late.

oh boy!!!

It was interesting to see the fuss various countries raised, then one by one shrunk away when they realized their own governments were doing the same thing to varying degrees.

Haven't heard much from Ms. Merkel lately - has she found herself on shaky ground?

The only thing that will change things is economics.

Corporations already do a lot to secure their data, and this will only heighten the trend, and when corporations start doing things, the consumer space isn't that far behind.

Inspiration, move me brightly!
