A couple of milestones for the audiophiles..

Ray Dolby passed away at his home in San Francisco.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-09-1...dio-pioneer2c-dies-aged-80/4955572

Whilst he is likely better known by many today for the DTS system used to provide the audio in most movie theatres one of his major achievements was the Dolby Noise reduction System that made the sound quality of cassette tapes acceptable to the more serious listener.

Another milestone.. the humble Compact Cassette that Mr Dolby's work made into a true music medium also celebrated it's 50th birthday on Sept 13.

While on the subject of milestones .. another legendary figure for many audiophiles, Amar G Bose passed away this past July..

No, DTS was made by the rival sound company DTS Inc. (later bought by DataSat). For the movie theatre business, Dolby first created the Dolby A and later Dolby SR (Spectral Recording) noise reduction systems during the era of analoge sound. Later Dolby Laboratories went on to create the digital SR-D (Spectral Recording Digital) sound format.

And you are absolutely correct.. that was one of the corrections I was going to make when I added the footnote about the late Dr Bose

R.I.P. Mr. Dolby.
I passed by his laboratory many times when I lived in San Francisco.

That's how I know Dolby(TM).
The Dolby noise reduction was also used on 8track and reel-to-reel tapes. Some of the most sought after 8track recorders have the Dolby(TM) encoding. My Marantz 4400 has Dolby(TM) encoding capabilities.

The cassette actually came out before the 8track but the 8track was more successful because of better sound quality. Yes the early cassette tape was so bad that it wasn't as good as 8track.
It was when the Walkman came out in 1979 and the introduction of CrO2 high bias and METAL bias (type IV) tape that made the format more popular and sound much better.
