It was just a matter of time before our Indian Sisters made their way to US Beauty Pageants.

Miss Nina Davuluri, 24 yrs old, a prospective doctor, earned the crown last night in Atlantic City, NJ.

Stunning, absolutely Stunning!

Congrats to Ms. Davuluri!

The racist/close-minded reaction from some people is sad. Glad to see she is keeping her head high.

The award is well deserved.

Not sure why the press is stealing her day in the spotlight with ignorant tweets by anonymous cowards. No one of prominence is supporting any of this nonsense. There are ignorant, racist tweets everyday by anonymous cowards.
We should focus on her and no one else.

My dad said something to the effect of "why does the ability to post online make so many people dumb?"

My response: "They were already dumb. They just have an immediate and very public way to spread the dumbness now."

Anyway, I don't exactly follow pageants or anything, but congrats to Miss America.

Congratulations to Mrs Davuluri! She looks really beautiful! I fully agree with you Superfly. Why in first place give attention to such bashing/racist tweets by media is a puzzel for me. They aren't worth to get published! I'm 100% sure that most people will agree that she is amazing!

Not sure why anyone would be opposed to an Indian-American winning. Just like in all societies and cultures there are dogs and models. Just remember it's all pink on the inside!

She is hot!

I didn't realize twitter trolling is a valid sampling of the public's opinion...FAIL on the mainstream media's part

Was there a backlash when Vanessa Williams won in 1984? If not, would the press report on it if social media was prevalent back then?

I don't really like her looks personally, but that happens often with pageants, I don't find most of the candidates very attractive (good enough for my bed, though).

Apparently this pageant's goal is to win scholarships, but I see that as usual most misses don't finish their studies and instead become TV hosts or reality TV stars or whatever.

It is really discouraging to see tweeters bashing success for whatever reason, including the press.
My only thought would they are trying to bring others down to their level.

Looks like an excellent choice, congrats Miss Davuluri.

This one of my concerns when I first heard about the Internet in the 1990s.

Quoting Luxair (Reply 5):

It's all staged. They want to give attention to these anonymous cowards so you know who (Obama) can come in and give a big speech on racism and how 'terrible America is' because of these racist cowards. He needs a public opinion boost and another distraction. The media is the one fueling this hatred.

Quoting deltadawg (Reply 6):

True!

Yes there was and it was by the press. They dragged up some older photos she had done with Penthouse magazine and took her crown back.
She went on and had a successful singing career.

Quoting Aesma (Reply 8):

It sure as hell is better than going in to debt and owing student loans.

Yes - that is part of the Miss Universe system. This is the Miss America, which was the original.

Quoting Aesma (Reply 8):

Yeah - you're definitely in the minority. There were actually quite a few in the competition that I didn't find all that attractive, but the new Miss America is definitely a looker.

Of course, I'm sure we all know that if she was East Asian-American (e.g. Korean, Japanese, Chinese, etc.) there'd be virtually no racism against her. It's typical of where most of the racism is aimed at these days in the US, and the West in general (basically anyone with dark skin).

Meh. I wouldn't kick her out of bed for farting but she's not that hot.

I was in India 2 weeks ago and met some women that made me weak at the knees. True, they did not have the classic, "Miss Universe" look, but there is a character and light in the Indian people that is quite enchanting. Combine it with the beautiful skin, big brown eyes....wow

Anyway, aren't these beauty pageants pretty much done with?

"Tweeting" is just about the most moronic activity the info-age has given us. Sampling "tweets" is simply a sampling of morons.

Which "personality" are you talking about, anyway.

Crap, here we go about racism in America again. And yet, racism in the US is actually among the mildest in the world. Certainly tamer than our model would see in India.

That a Korean or Japanese might see less in the US than an Indian (debatable) could have something to do with that they are far more attractive in general.

Agreed. From the traveling I have done, there is no doubt the U.S. IMO has the least amount of racism out there.

As for the winner, congrats. I did not see a problem with her winning I only watched the questions part though and I thought she did not even asked the question asked. The only one of the five to give a decent answer IMO was California, thought she should had been the winner.

It is obvious that everyone is upst about racism against this Indian American Miss America winner. Unfortunately, there will always be more than a few idiots who express their racist, backward views in 2013.

However, what most people don't realize is that there is horrible racism and hatred towards dark-skinned people in India itself. This young woman would have NEVER won a pageant in India itself as she would not be considered "fair and "lovely. Furthermore, she wouldn't get anywhere near Bollywood, as you have to be practically Nordic in complexion to be considered.

India is a hypocritical nation on skin color. A self hating, white wannabe hypocritical nation.
Want another example? Look at the actress Frieda Pinto. Another beauty in the west and disrespected in India.

Dare I ask where you have travelled?

The USA isn't "bad", don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't say that it was any better than Australia, New Zealand or Canada. Europe is mostly pretty good, but there can be more ethnocentrism in the "old" countries.

Australia? Really? As for Europe, ask any Turk in Germany. Or an Italian. France? They have a problem of their own with Algerians. And didn't the Brits pretty much invent racism? It's been easy for Europe to point fingers at everybody else until they actually import a bunch of foreigners themselves, mix it up and find out it isn't that easy.
