Chuo Shinkansen Tokyo-Nagoya Route Announced

On the news today, they announced that the Linear Chuo Shinkansen, one of the largest Maglev high-speed train projects underway, will follow a very direct route between Tokyo and Nagoya, phase one of the project which is slated to continue to Osaka eventually.
I was able to iPhone-snap the map which showed the stations chosen.

It says the average speed will be 286 km/h.

The route takes it under a very large tunnel in the Minami-Alps between Shinagawa and Kôfu Stations.
Here's the list of stations:
Shinagawa, Tokyo (Tokaido Shinkansen, Yamanote Line, Keihin-Tohoku Line, Tokaido Main Line, Yokosuka Line)
Sagamihara, Kanagawa (Yokohama Line)
Kôfu, Yamanashi (Chuo Main Line, Minobu Line)
Iida, Nagano (Iida Line)
Nakatsugawa, Gifu (Chuo Main Line)
Nagoya Station (Tokaido Main Line, Chuo Main Line, Kansai Main Line, Tokaido Shinkansen)

The routing between Tokyo and Nagoya should take about 40 minutes.

The maximum speed of the planned Japanese Maglev rolling stock is over 500km/h...
The average speed of the conventional HSR (average as in end to end distance divided by end to end time) is a lot less than 350km/h...
The cost is huge due to the extensive underground sections of it... about 100km of it... on a route less than 300km long.
40mins for Tokyo to Nagoya, makes a nice alternative to flying!

That sounds like a massive project.

However, I don't see where the 40 min trip time comes from, unless we're talking about a non-stop train that bypasses the intermediary stations.
In which case the quoted 286 km/h accounts for stopping a few times on the way, increasing the overall Tokyo-Nagoya trip time?

I'm also guessing the extensive tunneling is needed because Maglev doesn't do turns very well at 500 kph...

Agreed. You need to have a bunch of mechanics standing around it in any case.

Good point. Also land acquisition must be expensive and politically difficult.

The Chubu region (中部地方) where it is being built is the central part of Honshu and there are many places/companies that have names reflecting the region they are located in. According to the JR Times the route length is 286 km and the travel time is 40 minutes giving an overall speed of 429 km/h, which is just under the maximum operational speed (not average) of 431 km/h of the much shorter Shanghai - Pudong maglev.

By the sounds of it the Chuo Shinkansen will definitely be a train for getting from A to B and not enjoying the gorgeous scenery that Japan has to offer on their slower lines.

It literally means "Central."
There's the Chuo Line in Tokyo that cuts down the center of the western part of town, and subsequently continues to Nagoya through the central mountains.
Also in Osaka there's a Chuo Subway Line which cuts through the center of Osaka.

They've been pumping money into this for a while.....over 10 years now. Seems like JR East is quite fluid, and outside investment helps fund this project. Most analysts says this will be enormously successful.

No one thought when the Tokaido Shinkansen opened in 1964 that the 4.5 hour ride between Osaka and Tokyo would be 2.5 hours on the Nozomi service.

Again that's me on Jet lag.....I knew it was Central   

The Tokaido Shinkansen is run by them, and it rakes in so much cash for JR Tokai.
