I don't understand the money that is thrown just keeping them to the lifestlyle they've been accustomed to. ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££!!!! It's not fair that people that really don't do a terrible amout of work get the ultimate in government hand-outs, as well as their name and title plastered everywhere. But, on the otherhand they serve an important link to history. They are Britains link to its past. They represent tradition and the former power of the British Empire.
Do we keep them, or set them up in some nice coucil flats? Hmmm...I knew I had the Bolshvik's telephone number around here, one call, and we're all set

-All of the royal family pay taxes just like the rest of us (the Queen pays about £million a year).
-They do have a they don't just have money thrown at them. They're given a certain amount each year that they use for the up keep of there houses (even if they were abolised the old palaces etc. would need money to keep them in good condition), servents, transportation etc. So they do have bugits (sp?)
-The Queen does still have some political power.
-The Queen is the head of the Church of England.
-I'm certain that the amount of money that tourists bring into the UK because of the Royal Family is far greater than the money we give them.
-They work almost every day of the year visiting sick people, helping charities etc. (even the Queen Mum & she's 100!)
-They often visit other countries to help the relationship between the UK and the rest of the world.
Afew weeks ago the Italian people had a visit by HM and most were very happy to see her. That must have been good for the relationship between the two countries. Across the globe they are recognised as being British and our little islands are famous for them.
-They are our heratige.
-I honestly think that no matter how much people slag
them off, most would be upset to see them go.

British Royalty is a joke.

Yes she does, but very little.

Not always. Even if I didn't live in Britain, I would still want to visit, just for the political, and traditional ties between the US and the UK. Believe me, the royal family is not the main purpose for people to visit the UK. Most people go for other reasons, but take part in the fanfare, because, you know...it's tradition.

This is true. They do visit other nations for diplomatic purposes. Despite the fact the the role of the monarchy is pretty much relegated to that of a figurehead, royalty still maintain an air of respect, and it is seen as an honour for a host nation to receive a state visit by a monarchy.

If it aint broke, why fix it?
Whats wrong with the way things are?
Unrelated, but i think Lady Di, though not a propah royal, was a very popular symbol of royalty. And when i say popular, i mean genuinely popular.
And the stupid girls in my office, when they are not on Rahul "Hot Lips" Dravid, are drooling all over that William fellow.
So i guess the British Royals still have a role to play: atleast as one of the last "purely" British symbols if not anything else.
One question to my British friends: if you were asked to choose ONE thing to represent your country, which made u'r country stand out, what would that be?

Actually, the notion that the Queen has political power is just plain wrong. Theoretically she has to approve statutes, laws, and the Prime Minister has to ask for her consent when placing HM Forces into military action.
However, she would never, ever go against an elected politician. The last monarch to do this was over 300 years ago and he was being asked to sign his own execution order.
I don't think (and I hope not!!) that the Monarchy will ever be got rid of - after all, without them we're just another country. The amount of money they bring in in tourism far, far outweighs any money we have given them.
Aditionally, if we did get rid of them the Queen would still be one of the richest people on the planet - her investment portfolio is worth billions, plus all the art and land in Scotland etc. which is owned by the family, not by the government.

I would prefer both the royals and blair out.Shame I cant vote.
The royals are so useless.Prince Charles lectures scientists on protecting the environment while he dirves half way across europe in his fuel guzzling car.Charles is also A complete dunce. In Britain most people take 3 A-levels(its a bit the the US high school diploma),the clever ones take around 4,while the stupid ones take 2.His royal highness the pinhead of wales took only 2 and managed to get inot oxford because he was a royal. And while he was there his class mates said he was most stupid and boring person they have ever came across.
Look at the french, germans and americains. They dont have any royalty and they still get tourists. There is more to Britain then the royals.
I wonder what will happen to the royals if all their special rights and cash were taken away and they had to earn their own money just like the rest of us.

G-KIRAN: Remember though that after Cromwell's death the monarchy was restored and Cromwell's head was chopped off and put on a spike outside the Palace of Westminster...
