Today the Bundesliga started off to it's 40th season, the first game is Borussia Dortmund - Herta BSC. From what I've seen so far, the BVB seems even stronger then it was last season. If they continue this way, they'll be a major force in the Champions League this year. The other favorite for the title of the German Champion this year is, as always, Bayern München. They got 2 key players from the best european team last year(taking into account domestic cup, champions league and domestic league), Bayer Leverkusen. First we have the creative brazilian Ze Roberto, and on the other hand we have the offensive midfielder Michael Ballack, about who South Korea or the USA can surely tell you more ...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy. Together with the also-new Sebastian Deisler, who is, as always, injured, and Mehmet School, their new offensive midfield is second to none in europe. Will be an intersting season...

The thing I like about Bayern Munich is that they play as a team, not a collection of individuals, and their determination to win is impressive.

How come it's only the 40th season, Racko? Presumably league football started pretty quickly after the war, so what happened around 1962?

And if you tell me it was something to do with the Berlin Wall going up you're going to have to provide an awful lot of detail to stop my scepticism...  Big grin

The Bundesliga started in 1963, before that we had 5 "Oberligas" (North, South, West, Southwest and Berlin), the Oberliga-system started in 1902 (sometimes there were more Oberligas, obviously East and also Austria(don't know what the name was)). The only years without this system were 1903, 1914-1918 and 1944-1946. So this year we have the 40th season of the Bundesliga, but we'll have the 92th German Champion  Smile

Sorry if this takes it slightly off topic, but are you saying that for the first five years of the second world war the league system continued as normal? Despite all the bombing?

Well, I never knew that. Did the players get exemption from military service or something? Presumably evening kick-offs (floodlights and all that) were abandoned, but even during the day having crowds of people in a stadium must have been a hell of a risk.

I never thought Racko would ever educate me, but here we are...  Big grin

Finally, after 13 years of hurts, football´s coming home:

96 is back in the Bundesliga !!!

PS: My tip for the bowl is: BVB. Great game yesterday, but they should´ve scored 3 more goals. And, thanks to Mr. referee (forgot the name), the BVB didn´t get the penalty after the obvious foul at Addo.

Greetings from HAJ,

Christian

Did you see Matthias Sammer at the Premiere/SAT 1 Studio after the Game ? I think he and the referee will never be friends... Big grin

And it is going to be my 34th or 35th season of finding myself accidentially accompanied by those drunk, yelling weirdos in fan-underwear on trains.  Pissed
With intend not to get in touch with them, I even booked ultra short haul hops (TXL-HAM or similar) during the past years. Now LH canceled the service and I can assure you: If another prehistoric weasel is going to get himself undressed on train or to drop his can of beer over my Jeans, I will knock his rotten teeths of his mouth.
