Alien Attack In India? *weird*

This story came from "The Australian"

A mysterious flying object, said to attack sleeping villagers, has sparked mass hysteria and rioting across the a north Indian state.

The object, described as a flying sphere emitting red and blue light, is said to strike in the middle of the night, leaving victims with burns or scratches on their faces and limbs.

At least seven unexplained deaths in the area have been attributed to the 'muhnochwa', sparking panic among villagers.

Officials have suggested a raft of explanations, from an alien invasion to a new and unknown breed of insect.

Villagers across the region no longer sleep outside, as they usually do in summer, fearing they will be easy prey for the muhnochwa.

The Times of India reported that the national intelligence bureau was sufficiently concerned to send its own agents to investigate the "alien" invasion.

After listening to villagers' descriptions of the muhnochwa, the agents constructed a replica from the base of a mixer-grinder, fitted with coloured lights, and hoisted it on to a pole to entice the extra-terrestrial. Then they waited.

A videotape of the incident was said to show a flash of light passing across the screen. The agents concluded that the villagers were right, and that they were indeed experiencing an extra-terrestrial invasion.

Local doctors, however, have dismissed the phenomenon as mass hysteria.

Any opinions on this? Very bizarre indeed.

Cheers,
Dean

This was solved a couple of weeks back by scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology. The 'aliens' were in fact ball lightning, a rare phenomenon that suddenly cropped up more regularly because of the prevailing dry conditions due to the delay in the annual monsoon rains.

Mass Hysteria is not uncommon in India. Remember the *Monkey Men* (ape-like beasts) who attacked residents of towns adjoining the National Capital? Or the Wolf Attacks?

The theory put forward by the IIT scientists has also been set aside as being improbable. The latest *theory* is that this mass hysteria is being instigated by Mulayam Singh's men to topple the State Govt led by Mayawati. 2 people were killed when a mob protesting against the State Govt's inaction staged a protest march.

Ball lightning is what you get when you walk across a carpet pantsless but wearing tennis shoes. Feels good or bad, depending on your mood...
