Is it my imagination or are there now twice as many ads as we used to have! Now there are ads on the top and the bottom of the page. I understand that they are needed to rum this site but still there must be some other solution!

And before people take me apart saying that I use AT Guard and that it odes not affetc me etc. Firstly it is none of your business what I use and what I dont use. Secondly I reconsidered the use of AT Guard while on certain sites!

Jeremiah, much as I respect you input on the other forums, I must say that it's time we left Johan alone regarding the ads. How do you think Airliners.net would survive without them?
Ads are a necessity of modern websites, at least large ones, and asking Johan to take down the ads is asking him to take down the site.
Also- I use AT Guard as well, but only on certain sites that I know to harvest cookies from adbars. I'm fairly sure that doubleclick.net harvests cookies from all of its adbars, and Johan, if you can clarify this for me, I'd appreciate it, and I leave AT Guard off when on Airliners.net- I even click the adbars and visit one link inside the adbar at least once per A.N visit, something I do for no other site.
Johan, you've done a great job with A.N, and I'm happy to allow the scum at DoubleClick to find out whatever they want about me in order to keep the site going.

AIRLINERS.NET CREW
SITE ADMIN

Hello guys,

Yes, during a testing period we now have two banners on ever page. One at the top and one at the bottom. Pages should actually load faster though as the banners are just two of the same (just loaded ones) and the new ad servers should be significantly faster.

Airliners.net are now using Sonar Network as ad agency (they sell our banner space to advertisers). Sonar is using the Doubleclick DART technology to deliver ads. This technology makes it possible for advertisers to target, for an example, people coming to this site from Sweden (or Texas, the UK, Japan etc). Advertisers with a Swedish product (like a book in Swedish) are only interested in showing an ad for their product for Swedish users and would therefore be willing to pay us more if we are able to display the ad for only Swedes (computers with an IP address originating in Sweden - ending on .se)

That's basically how it works. By targeting, advertisers can show banners that have a higher chance of interesting you. It's a win-win situation.

Everyone nowadays use cookies and I assure you it's absolutely nothing to be afraid of. It makes it easier to run a website. I use cookies to show the "Personal frontpage" that tells you how many photos have been added since last time you visited. How does it work? Well, the number of photos in the database the last time you visited is saved on your hard disk (as a text file in the windows/cookies directory - have a look!). Next time you visit, my script reads that number and subtracts it from the current number and makes it into a link. Simple as that. It would not be possible without cookies. The discussion forums also use cookies as well as the electronic postcard service and photo upload page.

Anything I save in a cookie (on Airliners.net) can only be read on Airliners.net!

I can not save your house address, nr of girl friends, type of work or anything else of that kind unless you fill out a form on Airliners.net and submit that info to me! Same goes for the advertisers. They can only save things like how many minutes your computer (IP number) stayed on Airliners.net, how many pages you seen etc. NOTHING PERSONAL.

I will later be able to see the average time a user stays on the site, the average number of pages users see, the daily page views for the whole site etc. That is very important information for a site owner.

If I haven't convinced you, you can turn off cookies in your web browser. Airliners.net will loose a lot of functionality and I don't recommend it. You can also turn of the cookies on our ad banners. Just go here to read more.

I hope that cleared things up. Don't hesitate to ask more questions.

Regards,
Johan Lundgren
Editor Airliners.net

Johan- that cleared it up well. I leave cookies on in my browser- see how far you get without them, eh? AT Guard blocks most, but, like I said, I'm more than happy to leave it off on sites that I know and trust (i.e. A.N).
Also, how exactly do the discussion forums use cookies? User tracking?
