I was trying to explain to my American friend "Roley a.k.a "PolishAir42" that
the American's have a total different sighting to cars as apposed to us
Europeans:-



In my eyes this is a DAMN mighty fine car, what do you think?

Pretty nice, but not coming to the States unfortunately. 230hp 3.2L VR6 engine, 4Motion, and a real sports tuned suspension.... sad really. Though we did manage to get the GTI 337 limited edition in North America.

However when the 5th generation Golf comes to the US, it will be available with the 3.2L VR6 as the top-engine... possibly with 4Motion as well.

This vehicle would do very well, but depending on the price. It's a really nice alternative to the Subaru WRX, and the Mitsu Lancer. VW still hasn't officially made up their mind on the R32 coming to America or not, but it will unlikely make it here. I don't think they'll be able to get it for a price that Americans will accept.

Guess we will have to wait for the 5th generation Golf, or the Audi A3 when it makes it here too with the 3.2 VR6 and Quattro (i.e. 4Motion).

The big sticking point on the R32 is that its estimated US sticker price would be getting close to $35k. Well above that of the WRX and Lancer Evo VII. At that point a lot of people would be asking the question, why not just go for a TT Quattro... just as much performance but more prestige.

Plus the large success of the WRX, it has accounted for more than half of all Impreza sales in the US, is related to its status as a WRC rally car... which will also help the Evo as well.

Americans are fuel guzzlers, they dont care what car they have only that it burns fuel at a ridiculose speed, compared to us Europeans where we are much more economical :P with MUCH nicer cars!

Too bad that the pricetag is so high, baseprise here in Sweden is roughly €34 000 (or 319 000 SEK), for that price I'd rather take the Subaru Impreza 2.0 WRX (or spend some more and get the Impreza WRX Sti or Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI)...

it doesnt look like a beelte.. but one car can ruin it all... i dont know how much that car is in american.. but my guess is about $20-22K and why pay that much for a car that is only descent in performance when you can get a z28 a GT or even an audi a4 or s4.....

For a tiny little 4-dr hatchback like that I'd pay 20K tops, with all the options. 35K US for that little thing... You could get a damn Passat, BMW 328i, or even a Mercedes C class... Hell, you could buy an ML320 for that!

The US won't get the current Volkswagen Golf R32 because by the time VW completes US emissions certification testing the next-generation VW Golf will be available. I believe that VW will officially unveil the next-generation Golf at the 2003 Frankfurt Auto Show and will likely introduce the new models to the US market in early 2004. This means the US version of the Golf R32 based on the next-generation Golf will probably arrive the spring of 2004 as an early 2005 model.

Saw a R32 at the local VW dealer last week, definately an agressive-looking Golf, but it doesn't look cheap like those tuned Golf II/III. RayChuang is right about the Golf V at the IAA in 2003

The Golf R32 is btw just the start of a whole series of "sport"-VWs, the R stands for Rennsport (Racing).

All I know is that the R32 based on the next-generation Golf will be one wickedly-fast car--they're talking fast enough to hit the 155 mph (250 km/h) governed speed limit agreed upon by German auto manufacturers except Porsche. Mind you, I'm sure someone will change the onboard computer to remove this limit and we maybe talking 167 mph (270 km/h) top speed.

Which does remind me: I wonder has anyone at Alpina tried to remove the speed limiter on the current BMW M3? My guess is with the speed limiter removed the top speed of the M3 might be around 171 mph (275 km/h).

With the EPA mandating the reduction of sulfur compounds in diesel fuel by 2005, I wouldn't be surprised that we may see the next-generation Golf with the PD130 turbodiesel engine sold in the US market by then, too.

There is a huge VW following out there (I have a Passat) and what we do is "chip" our cars. That means that if we install different software onto our cars computers we essentially remove the top speed of 130mph (in America) and also add more torque as well as horsepower...With just a software change, no other changes necessary! I can get from 170 hp stock in my 1.8 turbo Passat to 220hp!
