Two rules in aviation, don't hit anything and don't run out of gas, cause if you run out of gas yer gonna hit something.

Compaq laptops do not fare well in PC Magazine's annual buyer's survey, which includes categories such as DOA (dead on arrival), reliability, and customer support from the company.
Dell, IBM and Macintosh consistently do well in the laptop category. Gateway, Toshiba and Hewlett Packard complete the second tier of performers. Compaq and Winbooks are low on the chart of performers.

Mine crashed... a LOT. There was one point where they forgot to install something at the factory, it wiped out everything I had on the computer. Then I got a Dell, and everything's been working out well.

Every Compaq laptop I have delt with is junk. My friend has had to send his into the factory two times in the year that he's had it. And I had to totally reformat my grandparents Compaq. Compaqs are junk, get a Gateway.

I have a Compaq Presario 1500 Laptop (typing on it right now). Contrary to everything thats been said before, its great. Never any problems, people always helpful with questions, runs great, good battery life. Maybe the takeover by HP has changed things?
Definately do NOT get a laptop with shared video memory. Every person I know who has that and tries to multitask or do graphics intensive things experiences a nightmare. My dad works with a guy who designed some of the shared video memory systems at Intel and he said he would not even buy it.
