Being a Brit, I'll have to go for.....
....the Roman Empire. Many reasons, many of which were mentioned in Monty Python's Life of Brian. Not forgetting the vast geographic location it covered for an empire of its time - we're talking circa first thru third centuries AD. At the Empire's height, it stretched from the British Isles, reaching down into Spain, northern Africa, the Caspian Sea and the Syrian desert.
The Greek empire predates everything on your list, and I believe it at least deserves an 'honourable mention'. Of course, *IANAHE...

Remember folks, Empires shouldn't just be counted based on territory. Take into account thier culture, it's impact on future history, infrestructure, etc, etc.
a) The Roman Empire extended at one point from Scotland to to Mesopotamia. It lasted over 400 years (without counting the republic years before)
b)The Romans created the greatest networks of roads in human history, that would last in Europe for thousands of years and only be surpassed in quality by 20th century roads!!
c)The Romans, unlike other Empires, where not barbaric (most of the time), with the people they conquered. They actually left them to worship and rule themselves as they wished as long as they acknowledged the supreme authority of the Emperor. Most conquereds actually were eventually granted Roman citizenship.
d) The Romans constructed in their conquered areas acqueducts, public sanitation, libraries, theaters, even hot water in some places. On the Roman roads, security was provided during the Pax Romana. All of this made trade flourish and provided for a great deal of innovation in arts, science, etc.
e)Finally, look at the lasting impacts. Many of our customs can be traced back to the Romans (and Greeks), even our laws. Houndreds of millions of people speak 'Romance' languages, and English itself is greatly Latin in it's vocabulary. Christianity became the oficial religion of the Empire and look at the impact that had on human history.
For all of these and other reasons, The Roman Empire is ceartanly the greatest empire of all time.

Time for the Monty Python lines then..
- Yeah, all right, Stan. Don't label the point. And what have they [the Romans] ever given us in return?
- The aquaduct?
- The aquaduct.
- Oh yeah, yeah. They did give us that. That's true, yeah.
- And sanitation.
- Oh yeah, the sanitation, Reg. Remember what the city used to be like.
- Yeah, all right, I'll grant you the aquaduct , the santation are two things the Romans have done...
- And the roads.
- Well, yeah. Obviously the roads, I mean the roads go without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitation, the aquaduct, and the roads...
- Yeah, yeah, all right. Fair enough...
- And the wine.
- Oh, yeah
- Yeah. Yeah, That's something that we'd really miss, if the Romans left, huh.
- Public baths.
- And it's safe to walk the in streets at night now
- Yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. Let's face it, the only ones who could in a place like this.
- Huhuhuh. Huhuhuhuhuh.
- All right. But apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system, and public health... What have the Romans ever done for us?
- Brought peace?
- Oh, peace! Shaddup.

Have you ever heard of Pax Romana?During the roman empire trade flourished and it was mostly peaceful.Their empire lasted for centuries before it broke down. Also many major langugues are based on latin which the Romans started.English,Spanish,French,Italian and Portuguese are based on Latin.Even the British empire implemented some roman laws as well.
The British empire was the largest empire in the history of mankind, but it only lasted for around 300 years. The greatest contribution the Brits gave us was the english languege. But they also gave us the following:
1.the idea of going on holidays. It was the Brits who started the Fench Riviera.
2.railways.The worlds 1st railway was built between Manchester and Liverpool. They also had the 1st underground.
3.The World Wide Web.Heard of Tim Berners-Lee?
4.Laws of Aerodynamics
5.Worlds 1st passenger jet.
6.Computers(mostly),heard of Alan Turing?
7.Christmas tree! The only contribution the British royal family has made to the world. Thanks goes to Prince Albert, spouse of Queen Victoria.
8.United States of America ,Australia and New Zealand.
Most of the population of these countries originally came from Britian. The original 13 states of the USA were British Colonies who gain ed independence.
10.The TV!John Logie Baird got here before Philo farnsworth
11.Genetics.Watson(UK) and Crick(US) discovered DNA,the worlds 1st test-tube baby Louise Brown was developed and born in the UK and the worlds 1st clone "Dolly" was cloned in scotland.
12.Cricket,football,rugby,squash,badminton,tennis and Formula One racing.American football is based on rugby, baseball is based on rounders and Basketball could be based on netball.
The Amercans have given us:
5.NBA(but basketball was invented by a canadian,Bulls rule!)
7.Baseball (go on you Yankees!New york Yankees rule!)
10.Thai silk industry(Jim Thompson)
I am not so familar with US history so can you add on to this list.

Current British Empire?...what?? If anyone has a 'current' empire, its the Americans.
I like the Brits and all, but I don't think they had anything close to the Romans, Greeks, or Persians etc as far as an empire.
All they basically had was a handful of poverty stricken territories that they tapped for resources. Plus, each of these areas were scattered around like balls on a pool table. Also, the idea did not live very long either.
Please don't take this the wrong way my British friends, but I just don't agree.

I would go for the Roman empire first with the others a distant 2nd. Greeks, Egyptians, Brits and the Chinese, those Chinese have been around a long time, they just seem to stuck close to themselves without spreading themselves around to much. Must be a pretty hard job try to control over a billion people.
Maybe in a few years try 1000 and we might have United States join this list as well.

American empire? What American empire? The only colonies the American have had are a few islands in the Pacific and the west indies.Anerican maybe the worlds most powerful nation in the world but they never had any real empire. What I think dhl123sg means is that which empire is the greatest in terms of colonies.

I am not taking this as an insult to my national pride but I think you need a quick history lesson. No hard feelings.
For your info I have included every country that has been under British and english control at any one point in their history.
2.the original USA(1st 13 states to declare independence)
6.Turks & Caicos Islands
7.British Virgin Islands
12.Trinidad & Tobago
15.France(the english ruled most of France in the 14th and 15th century)
44.Papua New Guinea
The British empire at its height ruled over 1 billion people and covered over 25% of the earth surface. No other empire be it the romans, greeks, persians, french,
germans, dutch, italians, spanish, portuguese or the americans have ever come close to matching that.
Britain was one of the most powerful nations in the world from the 16th century till World WarII.
There is a saying that shows how powerful the Brits were back then,it goes like this:
"Being British is like playing poker with every other nation in the world except that god has given you the 4 aces."
Just imagine a nation of less then 50 million ruling over an empire of around 1 billion.Amazing.
Easily the greatest empire since the Romans and my joint greatest empire of all time.
"Rule Britainnia!" and "Pax Romana & Ave Caesar!"

1. Romans without a doubt
5. ghengis khan sorry to say but yes
you have to look at the greeks first, rome got most of their knowledge from them, rome was the greatest because they were really the first ande also they lead the way and made many of todays countries as they are examples are italy, france, spain, germany enough said there. carthage the first real traders of the world also one of the biggest fleets and first used money practically. ghengis khan, well he just owned more then half of asia and some of europe (thank god Poland stoped them or we might have been speaking a diffrwent language now. the byzantine empire was just a shadow of the roman empire but nonethless it was great. spain, well they just took over central america and south america so they had their right as an empire. And no folks colombus didnt discover America what a silly idea that is. Portugal, they were felt in many places from brazil to macau which now belongs to china, also great explorers of that time. Vikings well they discovered iceland, greenland and North America (lets not get the native americans into this) and they managaed to hold western britain for some time. Then theres Britain the biggest empire in terms of size but i dont bring much credit to them because they overtook lands where the people wherent armed (like the 13 colonies the indians werent a threat!)

Ok first of all I have to say that my gut instinct was to go with TWFirst on that star wars thing, but then I read over your posts, and I am split. The romans did have a lot to do with the way we think and the way western civilization is, but the british had a huge influence as well. And if you think as of late, which culture and its influences have penetrated the farthest into every land on earth? Which country does everyone know, a lot of people like, some dislike and others absoultly disdain? Which culture is the most mimicked, most copied, most reviewed? I would have to say american. Not because I am a psyco-nationalistic person, or because I think americans are better. But it seems that america has a HUGE influence on the world, weather people like it or not.
Now according to the original question, I guess my vote goes half to the british empire, and half to the roman empire.

your right by romans had way more influence than britain though romas get my full vote, yes american culture is a mass culture right now (examples are clothes, mcdonalds, music, movies). Itll go away though).
25 DG_pilot: You have to remember that the Americans integrated most of their 'colonies' into our existing country. -Dustin
26 LOT767-300ER: yea but they didnt really fight anyone for them! It wasent hard to do it!
27 Boeing in pdx: Ghengis khan had the larges land empire in history by the way I always judge a empire by it's military stregth so my list would be 1. The roman empire
28 LOT767-300ER: I would add the former soviet union to that list. Although they didnt have any colonies they influeneced dozens of countries politically and militarly
