I think the "respected user" list is useless and rediculous. A place for people to back slap their "buddies" on an internet message board. I've already deleted everyone on my "respected user" list and everyone who had me on their list should take my name off it.

Why are you coming across so bitter lately?
The respected users list is a great idea, one I subscribe to. I find that it allows people to show appreciation to who they may not necessarily agree with what or what a person has to say but respects their insightful / thoughful or well written opinion on subject matter.
It's an option that you can either take or leave. I know there are some people who have my utmost respect but I wouldn't dream off adding them to my list because it means nothing to them.

Hmm. Not really. I find that most of the people who respect others on this forum do so only on ideological lines. ("You like Airbus? Oh. I'll add you to my respected list.") I've seen people add people to their respected lists after coming up with the dumbest arguments, but as long as they're arguing the right side...

I'm somewhat a fan of the Respected Users list, but it does seem to be used an awful lot as a "popularity contest" type thing. I put people on my Respected Users list who I REALLY don't like (we clash on Airbus vs. Boeing and a few other things) but I respect them due to the fact that they back everything up and they post rationally and get a good point across (I'm referring mostly to CX747 here )

Respected users at one time meant something, alas it is nothing more than a beauty contest, so I kind of agree with Surf.
But mine I take to heart and have left it even with people who I dont agree with, since I "respect" their way of making a point, with supporting facts and elocution and demonstrating the ability to make an arguement.
Instead of "backslapping" your best bud, make the list actually mean something.
