ON Thursday night I left my computer on as I departed for work.
The computer was not running any programs and after about 15 minutes the screen saver would kick in and after 30 minutes it would go into sleep mode.
I get back from work at 12am and find that my computer is on but my monitor no longer has a functioning screen. I wiggle the mouse to wake it up but there is nothing, worse than that the green light indicating the power switch is turned off so I assumed that someone turned it off. I press the button to turn it on and nothing happens. I put my hand over the top and feel no heat coming off which means that something is wrong.
I thought my power cord was screwed so I rehooked my monitor with another power cord and still nothing works.
Do you guys know if there are places that can repair Monitors? Like Walmart or Future Shop?
I paid 520 bucks for this Viewsonic E790 19" .25-pitch and I am very upset that it has broken down on me.
I would appreciate some input.
Right now I am using my old 1997NEC 14" monitor to post this.

From the sound of it, the switching power supply probably broke down. It should be fixable, but only by a certified technician! CRT monitors are dangerous when opened!
I don´t know the situation over there, but maybe you should ask around at your local stores (maybe even TV and radio dealers).
After my secondary monitor has broken down a few times (with different symptoms, I´ve had it fixed once and fixed it myself at other times (only because I know very well what I´m doing)), I´ve finally stopped to use the "power save" function. It does indeed save power, but it stresses CRT monitors considerably to start up from sleep (LCDs are less affected). So basically it´s down to the choice between wasting power and wasting hardware...

I can tell you from experience (working there) that CompUSA does not service monitors in-store, but sends them out to someone else to do.. I'm not even sure if they still do that.. Best Buy is the same way..
Also, try calling ViewSonic.. Wal Mart does NOT repair monitors, but ViewSonic can direct you on where to take it or to send it to them (if the later, be prepared to pay an arm and a leg for shipping..)

I've suggested deletion of this thread because of a misleading topic. People may be led to think that you meant your pet lizard died and you were trying to revive it. That's what I thought, anyway. I felt pretty stupid when I read the post.

The answer is that I do not know. I just buy a new whatever has died. Drives my buddy crazy because he fixes and I give the pieces to him to toss.
I always thought I would work until I died. I find that I am ready to not work anymore.

That monitor is probably still under warranty. With .25 DPI, it's fairly new anyways. I currently have a Viewsonic F75f, and it's been fine. However, my previous Viewsonic gave us a bit of trouble on several occasions, including dying twice. It was revived those times though! Finally, it lost one of its colours and was out of warranty, so with the new computer, I got a new Viewsonic.

A few questions:
1. When you power up the monitor (with it plugged in to a signal, of course), can you hear the tube power up (i.e. something that sounds like static electricity jumping or a high-pitched whine)? If so, odds are something failed in the gun circuitry, not the high-voltage transformer (flyback).
2. Does the LED on the monitor glow green when hooked to an active video signal, or does it go orange? If it goes orange, it's probably the some of the onboard control circuitry (on the signal side). If no light appears, perhaps the low voltage system failed and the control electronics can't come up...
3. If applicable, can you bring up the OSD?
4. When'd you buy it? From ViewSonic: "All ViewSonic and Optiquest color CRT monitor products are warranted for (3) years for parts, CRT and labor."
I also want to reiterate what's been said before: never, under any circumstances, open a monitor or CRT device, there are extremely high voltages inside that don't dissipate when you turn the device off.
(Oh, and if you do have to buy a new monitor--get an LCD/FPD. Your eyes (and your energy bill) will thank you for it.)
