OK, maybe you've caught this in the other thread but I'm going to go to the Orange Bowl in a few weeks and need a little advice. I'm flying into FLL and the game is at Pro Player Stadium.
I've been to Ft. Lauderdale once before and I remember being in a real shady part of town with a bunch of nude peep shows and the like. I don't remember much more than that. I'm looking to stay somewhere in the Fort Lauderdale region or anywhere towards the stadium to the south. Where should I look for a hotel, or more specifically where shouldn't I be looking? Searches have come up with Pompano Beach, Sunrise, Plantation, Hallandale Beach, etc.. Anyone know anything about these places?
And secondly, I'll have about a day and a half to find something to do. What is there to do other than find a tavern and drink like I can do back home? I'm not really a beach person nor am I a go-out-clubbing type.

I always imagined you to be a party animal!
I can't think of anything else to do other than the beach and clubs in South Florida.
Maybe teach the locals how to punch a ballot card?

In Broward county:
If you want to be near the trendy beaches then east of Federal Highway (US1), just north of the airport is a good place to stay at. If you want to hang out with the Canadians or Europeans then south on US1 for a hotel, motel or dorm. If you are simply seeking tranquility then Plantation or Sunrise are your archetypical 'suburbia americana', with your typical big mall nearby...
The area where FLL is located is not really dangerous anyways, but if you don't feel confortable with it then the places I mentioned are probably good choices.
My internet was not shut down, the internet has shut me down

mls...
Pompano is pretty far from Pro Player Stadium, as is Sunrise...Hallandale is kinda close but Im not too familiar with the coastal areas of FLL...Plantation is somewhat close but still a little far away...
I find the FLL area lacking in things to do as well, I cant really help you there unfortunately...maybe something will pop into my mind...a Panthers game perhaps if there is one, games are never sold out and the tickets are fairly cheap and I enjoy going...their stadium is in Sunrise, which is the western part of the FLL area, bordering on the Everglades...

I live in Plantation, its a very nice middle class area with some new high-income developements, new hotels, restaurants and shopping. close to Sunrise with the Sawgrass Mills Mall, and the hockey arena only a short drive from downtown and the beaches. A great location.
It's not really that far from Pro Player, you just take University Drive (which runs right through the middle of Plantation) or the Turnpike South for a bit. Max 20-30 minutes with normal traffic.
If you decide to stay there, I'll be back from UF for the winter, you could give me a call.

Thanks for the advice everyone! We're going to stay somewhere around the Exec airport but it was a steal, like around $25 per person per night. A little out of the way but oh well.
Superfly:
I like to drink and party but I'm not a going out type, mainly because of the smoke. If I'm going to go somewhere to drink and have to tolerate the smoke, I need to be doing something I can't do at home like playing pool or looking at lots of boobies. But the last time I went to the titty bar my coat and other clothes just reeked afterward.

just so you know: most of pompano sucks. theres a beautiful houstons on atlantic blvd and the intracoastal but just about everything east of that to I-95 is a disaster.
Skip pompano. Skip most of deerfield too. mostly retirement communities and shitty shopping centers. deerfield beach is really tacky but there is a nice pier there if you like to fish.
skip coral springs - nothing for you to see there.
skip margate, miramar, tamarac, weston, pembroke pines, cooper city, plantation - see above.
sunrise is pretty worthless - with 2 notable exceptions: sawgrass mills (one of the world's largest outlet malls and a lot of fun) and National car rental center (which actually was recently renamed). ncr center is nhl florida panthers and good concerts. cool arena too.
downtown hollywood is kind of funky but small.
downtown fort lauderdale is excellent - terrific improvements over the years - its really a good time - bars, cool stores, great restaursnts, a museum at one end a beach at the other. spend almost all your time there between the Broward Center for the Perfmorning Arts and BeachPlace. Everything in between is good stuff and its not small - several miles long. Consider biking it if you want a good ride. or just walk.
area around fll executive airport is not that much fun. about 2 miles from my high school - pine crest school on NE62nd street/cypress creek road. there are some shopping centers and business parks. thats about it. regal on cypress and andrews is a nice movie theatre should it rain or something.
go check out my hometown - boca raton. id say for the number of people who live in her borders its possibly the most beautiful city in the country. women there don't hurt either.
what else - skip just about all of dade county other than:
- miami beach below 30th street
- central coconut grove. youll see when you get there. its excellent.
- coral gables. a little too pristine - but worth a look. this is the center of miami cuban wealth and its a beautiful city. check out the biltmore, miracle mile, etc...
-some people like little havana/calle ocho. i don't suggest it. kind of rundown and cliquey. theres a few good cuban restaurnats though.
-brickel avenue is also a little boring - nice office towers.
-downtown miami is not yet a destination. they're working on that - come back in 5 years.
-key biscayne is good for beaches and tennis and golf- not a whole lot more unless you can afford a beautiful condo.
-south miami is worth a look if you got time - see sunset place and downtown south miami

I can't wait either. We've had measurable snow collect on the grass a couple times since October but we've lucked out as far as getting a big snow storm so far. But the low temps when I get up and go to work in the morning have been in the teens recently, so I'm really looking forward to spending a couple days down there.
Thanks for the advice. We'll have a rental car so we'll be able to get around to some of those places alright.

I'm going down there next week...
Just a small reiteration of what Twaneedsnohelp said:
-Ft. Lauderdale Beach is pretty nice...lots of people watching...there are bars, but they usually have tables outside with some "fresh" beach air. The beach is right across the street. Max's Place has shopping and more eats.
-Las Olas provides for some nice restaurants
-Downtown Hollywood isn't too bad, but as Twa said, it's kind of small, but has more nice restaurants.
-There's always the imfamous South Beach...
-Coconut Grove is always happening
Those are the places I usually visit (aside from the airports!) when I am down there.

if you value your life, you will stay away from Military Tr. and Atlantic Blvd. in Delray Beach.

military trail and atlantic blvd is actually Pompano Beach (or just west of the city) and thats where some Canadian man who was lost looking for his family was shot to death early in the moning at a Shell gas station. I remember that well - it was a few years ago and my school is just 3 miles away in Fort Lauderdale.

If we do want to organize this, it would be wise to begin working out the details now. Getting more than 3 people to meet at a certain time and location can be difficult/
