Australia Qualified For World Cup 2006 Already?

Here are the available places for Germany 2006:

North/Central America 3 or 4
South America 5
Asia 4 or 5
Oceania 1
Africa 4
Europe 13

+ Germany as hosts.

At last Oceania gets a direct route to the finals which I have no doubt will be Australia. One North/Central American team plays off against an Asian team for the final place.

The Oceanic spot was voted in unanimously by FIFA, I don't know who lost a place though.

About bloody time too. Australia were good enough to be in the World Cup 4 years ago, instead of having to go through the farcically difficult qualification process that did its best to bar a place to Oceania. The Socceroos have some decent players, and are certainly a better team than some countries who go though (e.g. Saudi Arabia, Paraguay, Poland etc).

I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

I am from Oceania myself and I don't agree with this decision, an easier qualifying route perhaps but not an automatic place. The place taken has come from Europe (which I do agree with as they have too many).

BTW

I feel obliged to remind our Australian friends not to start their German lessons just yet. The last OFC team to qualify for the World Cup was New Zealand and the current OFC champion is also New Zealand. This is no gift for Australia (well known chokers on the big day) !

Last time I checked, hasn't New Zealand been in the World Cup more times than Australia? I know in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, New Zealand competed, of course, this is 20 years back.

1982, that's correct but Aus. was also in it once in 1974.
