Shocked today to hear of the death of Joe Strummer, best known as the lead singer of legendary UK band The Clash.
Joe, 50, seemingly died of a heart attack at home on 22nd December, he was married with children.
The Clash came to prominence in 1977, a punk band, they soon diversified musically, the 1979 'Combat Rock' album is regarded as a classic rock album, as it was released in the USA in 1980, Rolling Stone' magazine voted it the album of the 80's.
The Clash finally split in 1986, after two rudderless years without guitarist and Strummer's main songwriting partner, Mick Jones.
Strummer did some acting and various music projects, standing in for the 'unwell' Shane McGowan as lead singer of The Pouges at one time.
More recently, Strummer's new band The Mescaleros became a much loved act on the live circuit.
At least 6, often twice that many Clash songs at these shows, brilliantly performed, Strummer putting those half is age to shame, a great atmosphere too, reflecting the affection and admiration for Joe.
I saw them most recently in July.
I know that many of the members on here won't know who I'm talking about, but The Clash were a part of growing up for many of my generation, they also found success in the US too.

Yes, very sad news. Only 50 as well. I saw him with the Mescaleros only 2 years ago, when he supported the Who. Now both he and John Entwistle are gone.

The Sex Pistols were a phenomenon, but they were never a great band. The Clash were just class.

Sad to hear of his passing. The Clash was my favorite band during my college years.

RIP indeed. It catches your attention when people of (basically) your generation start dying unexpectedly . . . especially those who produced the backdrop for your own growing up. For those of us who did so in the 70's, and then went on to form our own bands, The Clash were always one of the guiding lights.

Some words people would do well to ponder:

...the new groups are not concerned
with what there is to be learned
they got burton suits, ha you think it's funny
turning rebellion into money

all over people changing their votes
along with their overcoats
if adolf hitler were here today
they'd send a limousine anyway...

The Clash were huge here in the States, my regret is not seeing them in concert. My friend Adam would brag to me all the time about the time he saw the Clash at Shea stadium, that's the concert that appears in the "Should I stay of Should I go" video (IIRC).

I LOVED The Clash. I went to a high school where EVERYTHING was top 40 or classic rock, I was a freak for liking The Clash. Really sad to hear of his death, right up there with the recent passing of Joey Ramone. Now punk legends are dying...man I feel old!

Gonna throw on "London Calling" and remember a great artist now...RIP  Sad

When I mentioned the 1979 album 'Combat Rock', I meant London Calling'.
What a berk I am! (Considering I was playing 'London Calling' when I wrote it!)

Tragic for his family Joe going so young, apparently after taking his dog for a walk, making me missing going to Joe's gigs pretty trivial.
