Just curious.......a site such as this, that gets a lot of traffic: how expensive is bandwidth for the visitors and downloads? I know that a small website could be run for like $60 a year, but I think bandwidth is really expensive for more traffic. Any ideas how much bandwidth this site uses? I would think a lot.

Bandwidth doesnt cost anything if you own your own server....... Except the price of the server of course. I dont think this site is hosted.

Yeah but JETPILOT, if you use your own internet connection you are going to need T1 at least, as say a 512k server is not going to be able to withstand more than say 15 connections at once.

If you have a photo database, you can use MySQL or whatever and host a website off of your computer instead of using a host, BUT then if you use a 512k internet connection you'd have 10 people downloading photos off your site (by opening the picture) and then you start losing bandwidth, page loading times increase and so do pictures.

So you are really looking at:

The price for web design IF you don't design your website yourself,
The price of your internet connection (can be up to $1000 a month)
The price of any software you may need to use
The price of upgrading the server that you host your website on, Dual processors, RAM, HDD space etc
and the price of the countless cups of coffee you will need  Big grin.

Also, any tech support, or any other human resources you may need.

Really depends on how big you want your website to be.

I'm pretty sure Johan said that he has a T1 (or was it T3??) line linked up to Stockholm, and then from there fast lines to all over the world. I'm sure that is very expensive, so probably $1000 a month for the bandwidth alone.

Well, not exactly. Bandwidth is flat-rate with most "full-speed" connections (like T1 or T3). However, most sites don't need full T1 all the time (especially at $1,100/month or so), so they buy a fraction of that bandwidth--that is usually billed on a "per bit" basis.

That's interesting. I always wondered how much it would cost to start up a site like this. But Johan I believe has hosting by the University over there. I think you really need "help" like that until you get off the ground and can pay your way.

Of course at the beginning you wouldn't need such a high bandwidth because you wouldn't have too many visitors until word spreads so it could be a bit cheaper.
