Any Tom & Jerry Fans Out There?

Just wanted to see if there was anyone else out there that loves this cartoon duo as much as I do. My favorites are the early years. 1940's-1950's. I don't care much for the "later years". They lost the great music scores of the 40's and 50's. I'd have to say my two favorites are "Salt Water Tabby" and "Professor Tom".

What are your favorites?

I think Tom and Jerry is one of the best, but more unsung classic cartoons out there. They were always overshadowed by Disney and, especially, the Warner Brothers cartoons (which were also great). Except the ones directed by Gene Deitch(?)...you know, the ones with the wacked-out screechy music in the background, and, frequently, the foul-tempered human character that was always mumbling under his breath...like the ship's captain in the "Dicky Moe" episode. I think I read they were produced in what was then Czechoslovakia...they were creepy.

Funny stuff, and almost all "visual humour" in the sense that there was little to no dialog. Thank God for Cartoon Network.

Haven't they edited some of these to get rid of some "racist" content, like Tom getting his face blown up in a teapot, and re-appearing in what looked like black-face. Also, Tom's owner (or owner's housekeeper) in the older episodes, who was a large Black woman spoke in rather stereotypical, Amos-n-Andy type tones.

I am a huge Tom and Jerry fan. Cartoons of today cannot compete with the classics!

I agree with KROC, Tom & Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Road Runner and all these classic cartoons are much better than the new stuff.

They have in fact dubbed over the black woman's character with a new voice that is, shall we say, has less ''accent".

KROC,

Yea, they have dubbed over the black woman's voice to have a more "modern voice".

Considering my really really shitty day (see civil av), this thread really lifted my spirits!

how about the episode where Jerry's cowboy uncle comes to town with his ukelele? "CRANBO!!!!!

OR the episodes where Tom watches moviesw with the other cats?

Or the episodes where Tom is wooing a lady??

I loved them. Are the on video at all??

Actaully, I always mention this to my fiance: Have you guys ever realized the classical music that show played? Between watching Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry, my music appreciation and love for classic music had its roots there in those cartoons!!!! Any of you experience this too?

"Or the episodes where Tom is wooing a lady??"

Yeah, Tom playing an upright bass, serenading some female cat with:
"Is you is...or is you ain't...my baby?"

Or, in an Old West episode:
Tom, in full cowboy garb, including spurs & chaps, sidling up to some cowgirl cat, rollling a cigarette, lighting it, taking a drag, then blowing the smoke out to spell "HOWDY".

*That* one would never see the light of day nowadays.

Hilarious!

Ah yes, the old cartoons of the 1940s and 1950s. Sadly now considered to be somehow wrong.
Noone dares show them anymore because they're supposed to cause:
- discrimination of minorities
- cruelty to animals
- needless violence
and they're not politically correct either...

I love them of course  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Tom and Jerry isn't the only cartoon where modern day censoring has ruined the value of them.

Did you ever see any of the Bugs Bunny stuff that was done during the war???

That's what they need to do, a DVD collection of the original-uncensored cartoons.

Heeey, what's up doc!

yes, I was referring to comics from the WW2/Korean war era in general and not just Tom&Jerry.
Early Popeye comics have also been censored into oblivion, as have many others.

I don't know why, but there are two sound bytes from T&J that just crack me the hell up when I'm watching them.

First one is the "gasp" that Tom makes when something surprises him.
The second is whenever Tom screams out in pain. (morbid maybe, but funny as hell)
