What companies currently occupy the Empire State Building? From what I remember alot of them were government organizations.

Also, have there been notable tenants in the past? GE never had space there did they, weren't they always at Rockefeller Center?

Most of the tenants in the ESB occupy fairly small blocks of space. As a result, the building has a multitude of tenants - the lobby directories are quite a sight - rather than a few big ones, in contrast to the situation in most other major office buildings.
Few if any of the current tenants are government organizations. As far as I know, GE never had space there.

I doubt any govt organisations have ever had significant office space in the Empire State Building.
As PROSA said most tenants are very small firms and this has been always been an image problem for the owners and lessors.
Have a read of Mitchell Pacellee's "Empire" (Wiley & Sons, 2001) - he covers the "ownership" sagas of that grand old building - would make great movie!

On the other hand, having a plethora of small tenants also adds a measure of stability. Building managment doesn't have to worry about a large-block tenant demanding costly rent concessions as a condition to extending its lease. Nor is there a concern about a large tenant putting surplus space on the sublet market at a rent that undercuts what management could get on a new lease.

Jcs17:

I belive the Z100 "studios" are in New Jersey, but they just transmit from the transmitor atop the ESB. At once, I do believe they were located in the ESB, but I think they mighta moved.. not 100% sure though, but I recall some members of the Z morning zoo mentioning something about their studios being in jersey...

Not on a professional basis, I'm an editor for a financial publisher, but I'm reasonably knowledgeable about the commercial r.e. market.
