What Is Ford Thinking? (Mustang)

Hey guys,
Since the introduction of the SN-95 body, and the newest style 1999 and up, I have been impressed with what Ford has been doing with the 'Stang. 2003 has to be one of the greatest years for the Mustang, with the production of the 2003 SVT Cobra, claimed to be the most powerful production ever built.
Now concepts for a whole new design of the famous legend have been going around for awhile, and it looks like Ford is focusing on this concept. http://www.stangnet.com/mustanggtconcept/

IMHO, this is a big mistake if this will be the future of this great muscle car. Alot of people may like the retro "Fastback" look, but this is taking a few steps backwards for Ford. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the days of the Fastback GT's and Mach1's etc. but let's face it, the look just does not mix with the nasty concept look. The new style has come so far, and now this? This is a greta dissapointment for me and many alike.
But looking at the new plans Ford has in store for a few years, includes a desperate update of it's 6-cyl model, which will drop the ageing 3.8l, and will receive the new 3.0l currently in the Taurus and other Ford's (But IMHO, I really think Ford should just drop the 6-cyl completely out of the picture, it really does not make much sense. But I know that many people who are not as "Hardcore" as some of us, and this makes up a large amount of customers. The 5.0l engine will be brought back in Mod form, as the 5.4l will now be available as a production engine in the 'Stang.

'Enough said, let's hear what you think.
-Tom

I don't think it's such a bad design. I wish they drop the 5.4 and in a supercharge that. As for the 6cylinder, the 3.8 is a good engine but I agree, it shold only be an 8cylinder.
I don't care much for the color coded steering wheel.

Ford is on this retro kick lately  Insane It started with the Thunderbird (ugly) and they have some other designs on the drawing board that resemble older out of production cars, has Detroit run out of ideas? I'd buy the new GTO over the Mustang.

Tom

Tbird:
I have to disagree. The Thunderbird is a sharp looking car and I am glad that the 'retro' look is catching on. Look at that ugly Taurus and Focus.
I am glad they are going for more 'stylish' looking vehicles.
The Crown Victoria is the best looking contemporary car in there line up.

This is one sharp beast!  Smokin cool

Superfly, im not sure if I agree with you on that the 3.8l was a great engine. The new Taurus and Focus are by far some of the better looking car's out there. Im not as big a fan of the new Thunderbird either. Superfly, where did you find those 'Vic concept pics? I have not seen or heard of something like that. I've seen a pic of the 2004-2005? vic, all that looks changed is the front end, and as with the pic's you provided, that's one part that has to be changed!

KFRG:
Embarrassment I should have clarified. The above pics are the 427 concept car or it might be called the Galaxie.
The Crown Victoria will most likely stay the same.
I guess different strokes for different folks.
Ford/Mercury/Lincoln is by far my favorite car company. It always puzzled me why the Taurus sells so well. I've never like them since they came out in 1986. I like all of there rear-drive cars (Thunderbirds, Mustangs, Crown Victorias and of course the big trucks).

Yeah, that 390HP Cobra is something, but if you put a supercharger on the LS1, anything Ford could make probably wouldn't have a chance.  Smile

"I really think Ford should just drop the 6-cyl completely out of the picture, it really does not make much sense."

If Ford did that, they're totally ignoring their female and entry-level sports car buyer market.

I saw that new concept photo of the Mustang, it looks alright, but I think they should just refine their current bodystyle a little more and breathe some life into their BLAND interior.

If you want a detailed design analysis pick up the current issue of Automobile, their design expert Robert Cumberford basically rips it apart. Loosely quoting the article basically individuals have crafted far better looking retro throwbacks for their Mustangs than Ford has.

When the current model originally came out in 93, or was it 94, I felt that it was fresh and unique... while still playing homage to the original car. The new-edge refreshening kept to that theme. The Mustang concept, which is not too far off the real thing, is far too retro and looks too much like a copy of the 69 fastback.

At least mechanically the Mustang will be stellar. It'll share the same platform as the Lincoln LS, Ford T'Bird, and Jaguar S-Type... and have an indepedant rear suspension. A major improvement over the current car (which aged fairly well) which traces its routes back to the 78 Fairmount. Base power is the 3.0L Duratec V6. The GTs get a revised 4.6L V8 sporting a 3-valve per cylinder head. The Mach gets a further tuned version of that engine... making 300+hp. Details on other special models and the SVT Cobra are not known... except that the rumored 5.0 model is not going to happen.

Now what I'd like to see... and it would be a cold day in Dearborn when this happens, is a nicely massaged version of the Jag 4.2L V8 dropped into the 'Stang. The engine already makes 300+hp out of the box... why not drop it into the new Mustang... afterall it does share the same platform as the Jag.

I drive a 99, I like the 92 5.0 Body style, then the '67 body. I like mine as well. I dont like the concept, it looks too much like a BMW. I like BMW, but I love mustangs. I has no "muscle" look to it,

When I saw this about two weeks ago my jaw just dropped! I love it and it is one of the few cars I would consider getting besides the Tbird and LS because I am truck/suv man. I think it will increase sales and be a huge success for ford.

Looks nice

the front bumper is a mess, but other than that, I like it.

Inset headlights don't look to practical, as they aren't projectors, but nice touch.

Overall a fine design for a Ford, but i'll take German looks anyway.
