Laugh if you want but I like Hair Metal along with classic metal and new metal. What is your favorite Hair Metal band? Mine would have to be Motley Crue.

I also really like classic metal like Black Sabath(ozzy) and while disturbed is a newer band they sound a lot like "classic metal" and I think they are great.

I was about to start a thread about this!  Smile

My favorite would be Ratt.
I like 1980s glam rock metal. It's fun to listen to and they carried the torch of what rock was all about. Sex, drugs and rock & roll. There videos had hot chicks and they all had a good time.
I was living in Los Angelas during those years. It was fun going to the Roxy, Trubador and The Whiskey back then. Hair metal kicks grunge musics ass by a long shot.!
I mean it!
I never understood all the anger and rage of the those rich Seattle punks with major record label deals.

Other great hair metal bands were:
KISS (80s era)
Whitesnake
Motley Crue
Vinnie Vincent
Warlock
Night Ranger
Heart (80s era)
Skid Row
Def Leppard
Gorky Park

Just be careful of what you call a "hair band"! Poison, Warrant yes. Skid Row, Tesla , no.
It really bugs me that late 80's/early 90's pop-rock always get ragged on. They did nothing to deserve all the bad press and people laughing whenever they're brought up. Lot's of awesome bands such as Extreme, Skid Row, Tesla and Mr. Big got shafted by being called hair metal and the negative conotations that go along with it.

That said there's no question of the glam/hair value of the following record:

However calling this next one "hair metal" is a load of &!%$.

I should add that rock in the 90's should have been shaped by Skid Row and Extreme, as critics in around 1991 predicted they would.

Iron Maiden is an awesome band from the 1980s but they aren't 'hair metal'.
They were the serious metal band.

I dont know if this would qualify...Golden Earring...with their one and only song. Joan Jett is also a pretty classic example of 80s Hair Bands.

This is a cool thread. I don't like the fact that it's widely accepted that this kind of music as cheesy.
Let's give credit wear credit is due. It's a shame that rock historians discredit this era and is an abomination that Pearl Jam & Nirvana will go down in history as more important bands.  Sad

Many glam rocker hair bands had guitarist that were almost un-touchable in terms of their talents. To play solos at warp speed over powerful drumbeats is something those grunge punks could never do.
I think 'hair metal' deserves some credit as an important era in rock history.

Personally I am a 1970s guy at heart and I like the more tasteful rhythms and melodies from bands of that time (Styx, Doobies, Chicago, ELO, Kansas, etc).

True enough Superfly. So many of bands were discredited because they were "hair bands" and had some really great talent.

btw: My two favorite Mötley Crue songs:
1. Smoking in the boy's room
2. The song Tommy Lee was humming in...ahem...for his wife on that homemade video Big grin

I'll admit to being a Slaughter fan back in the day. I also pretended to like Metallica (even though they aren't "hair") but if the truth will be told, they were/are too hard for me. Good old KBER 101 introduced me to all that stuff. I don't really listen to it anymore, but it's still one of my radio presets.

However, that same radio station introduced me to legitimant rock, such as Rush and Led Zeppelin, which made me switch radio stations to Z93 (KLZX), the classic rock station. I bought my first 'Dead album in 8th grade.

Unfortunately, the great Z93 went country (puke!) and changed to KBUL 93. So now we have the edgy-er Rock 99.1, and Arrow 103.5. I have to alternate between the two-- 99.1 can be a little too hard for me (although they play a lot of 'Zeppelin), and Arrow can be a little too soft--I can't stand Elton John or Billy Joel, but for some reason, Arrow thinks that they are great. So I have to switch stations every now and then.

P.S. Superfly,

I'm with you except for Chicago.

The difference between Nu-metal and hair metal is that many hair metal bands had talent, whilst most nu-metal bands don't.

My favourite would have to be Dokken, I have their least commercial-sounding album which is also their best and heaviest (back for the attack), 'Mr. Scary' is a really good instrumental...

I don't like many hair metal bands, but some did have their moments, others that I'd hazard a mention would be...

Skid Row
Ratt
XYZ
Slaughter..

ok thats it lol.. Big grin
