TULSA, Okla. -- American Airlines workers found 24 pounds of cocaine stashed in a cargo area of an airplane undergoing maintenance Tuesday, U.S. Customs Department officials said.

The aircraft's last flight before being brought to Tulsa was from Montego Bay, Jamaica, to Kennedy International Airport in New York, Turner said.

Drugs and Jamaica:

While at the Double A, every other day, I’d come to work and the daily memo was Please See N* “KIN DRUG INCIDENT” or “MBJ DRUG INCIDENT”

Or see “JFK/MIA DRUG INCIDENT” and it mentioned some flight originating in KIN or MBJ. (the above are references in Sabre to descriptions of pax caught w/ narcotics)

I went to Runaway Bay, Jamaica in June 2001 for my brother’s wedding. Every time I turned around, some guy named Nigel was like “You need green stuff?” or "How much you pay for white stuff?”

I know Houston, the remainder of Texas, and the entire US had a large drug problem, but Drugs must be Jamaica’s number one export…

 Smokin cool

I know for a fact that it's mostly tourists who keep the trade so active. Jamaicans themselves don't touch the stuff. I had a college friend of mine the other day that went to Jamaica with a few other friends just for a drug holiday. Their sole intention was to sample the local goods.

The funny thing is, the Jamaican government is extremely hard on anyone caught with drugs, ESPECIALLY tourists. You read in the Jamaican paper every so often about very stiff sentences being handed down to such and such person, a Brit caught while attempting to board a flight with 2 pounds of marijuana, or such and such person, American, etc., caught trying to expert cocaine, etc. The sentences are the harshest I've ever read about for drug violations. Just the other day a British woman was fined and sentenced to a few years in prison for trying to leave the island with a small bag of pot in her luggage.

What is interesting about this scenario is that the drugs originate in Colombia, with countries like Jamaica and the Bahamas being used as a transshipment base. In 2000, Jamaica superceded Colombia as the primary carrier base for drug shipment on airliners. Since then, the governments of Jamaica, the U.K. and the U.S. has been working very closely to stem the tide of drug shipment. The U.S. has donated several speed boats and U.S. Coast Guard assistance in patrolling Jamaica's coasts, and the U.K. has donated special drug sensing equipment for the airports. The Jamaican government has also signed several agreements with the U.S. which gives the CIA and other investigating authorities domestic access during investigations, etc.

This thread sounds like a typically memo or media informed person. Thanks to foreigners the drug trade is alive in Jamaica as it is one of the Caribbeans major transshipment ports for the stuff. As pointed out by Hepkat, most Jamaicans don't even touch the stuff .

They sure seen to market the stuff. Every bartender, host, waiter, steward, tour guide, chef, janitor, and Tom, Dick, and Henry at this place was peddling either ‘Green stuff, white stuff, or a woman.’

Try walking through the RLD in Amsterdam. About every 20 yards you walk you'll have some African or Caribbean guy whisper "ecstasy, coke" to you as you walk past.

I don't know where you've heard this, but a friend of mine's mother is a judge there, so trust me, these things are VERY illegal in Jamaica.

People push these things on tourists because they know there's a market for it.

Hepkat, Jm320,

Are you using the green and white stuff?

I have been to Jamaic numerous times, and I have a friend that has a vacation home near Nagril.

To say that foreigners keep the drug culture alive is just naive.

My friend Jamaicans don't have the money to keep it alive. Who do you think does? Maybe you'll figure it out. Let me know when you do.

Hepkat- I have been to Jamaica 3 times. Negril ,and Kingston, and Montego Bay. If you say they are "very illegal" than why don't cops care? They have weed farms in the mountains. They don't really put much into their drug stoppage. Maybe the US should do that, Jamaica doesn't seem to have a huge crime problem, and they are not going into a war soon. My friend accidently brought back some weed from Jamaica to EWR, security never found it either. He had it in a pair of shorts, he didnt mean to bring it back. Go figure...

Keep it alive? My friend, marijuana is a weed, and is very easy to keep alive especially in your climate. I've been to Montego Bay once, about 3 years ago, and was offered pot just about everywhere...on the beach, walking on the streets, by taxi drivers.... And you smoke it everywhere, the cops dont care. We went down to a beach and virtually every local was holding a dutchie and there were cops all over the parking lot. People say its "very illegal," but basically the only time you are gonna get busted for it is when you try to smuggle it out of the country...which is retarded in the first place.

Well, I see this thread has livened up a bit. Some more thoughts about Jamaica:

1 – the Montego Bay airport is a total piece of shit

2 – the roads (or is there only one) are complete crap

3 – I saw a police office driving a Mercedes (lights / siren on) Shitty infrastructure and the cops are driving German luxury automobiles? Can we say corruption?

4 – I picked up a MBJ Local Newspaper. There was a story about Jamaica’s poverty / crime / drugs. The headline was ‘Jamaica, we have a problem.’ LOL

5 – the people of Jamaica were extremely friendly and quite hospitable (sans the regular pesky peddlers a la a any tourist area the world round ). They seem to enjoy life in such a gorgeous land on a beautiful sea.

Apparenly someone doesn't like Donald Gangster, er Sangster International Airport. Almost every thing in those gift shops is older than me.

But, Jamaica as a whole is nice, but to say Jamaicans don't have a drug problem is stupid.
