Nothing on CNN either - if it's true, then a breaking news should be on its way.

If EITHER is true-defection or Assassination, it COULD signal a possible coup in Iraq on the eve of war.

At risk of boasting, I was told by rock legend Keith Emerson of Emerson Lake & Palmer on the phone a few minutes ago.

(Is this a 'reliable source'?)

One interesting `source' (Israeli right-wing) is

It says he has escaped but was injured. No informations on his current location. Spiegel sources say he has handed himself over to oppositional forces in Arbil, nothern Iraq.

Hmmm the fog of war settles in.
I suppose it could be disinfo to support coup attempts.
Eventually a `Saddam is captured' report may pop up.
It may not be true, but Iraqi troops may quit then, since Saddam (or Aziz) is unlikely to say `no here I am! Not dead yet, see?' LOL

MYSTERY OVER TARIQ AZIZ

The Foreign Office is investigating rumours that Tariq Aziz, the Iraqi deputy prime minister, has defected to Northern Iraq.

Junior Foreign Office minister Mike O'Brien told the Commons that the rumours came from a Bulgarian source.

Labour's Ann Clwyd (Cynon Valley) said: "We do have reports that are as yet unconfirmed that Tariq Aziz has defected to Northern Iraq to Kurdish Democratic Party territory.

"It would be very useful to have a statement if that is confirmed."

Mr O'Brien said: "We too have heard these rumours and we are seeking confirmation, or not, of them."

The Foreign Office said there was nothing more to add to Mr O'Brien's remarks at this stage.

One is confirmed.

He has not defected. He spoke live on Iraqi TV and I just saw a clip of it on ITV News (UK)

For shame on him.

"Information" to the Iraqi people by means of US TV and radio broadcasts and air dropped leaflets is probably at the maximum at this very moment. Total confusion is of course one of the goals.

At the same time international new media are gearing up to hystery.

That cocktail will give some "funny" effects during the next few days.
