The US State Department announced on Friday that it will be shutting its embassy in Paris, France effective immediately. This move allegedly comes about in view of heightened concerns that it may become a target for a terrorist attack.
US Citizens in France have been advised to take prudent steps and institute additional safety measures to ensure their safety. The Embassy staff will continue to provide emergency services only to US Citizens in distress.
Diplomatic relations between the US and France have reached a low point following disagreement about the means of disarming Iraq in accordance with UN resolutions. The French Government is one of the most outspoken critics of the US policy on Iraq.

I think this may have to do with the protests that happened in front of it in the past couple of days, including one that destroyed a McDonalds before they can to the embassy. It's for the protection of the Marines and the staff inside. They also will be providing emergency services, but until the State department feels that it's safe to open up, they won't, this has nothing to do with the diplomatic relations at this point.
