Must Read -- Message from England

No matter what your views on President Bush's statement of upcoming war, this, from an English journalist, is very interesting. Just a word of background for those of you who aren't familiar with the UK's Daily Mirror. This is a notoriously left-wing daily that is normally not supportive of the Colonials across the Atlantic.

Tony Parsons ... Daily Mirror ... September 11, 2002

One year ago, the world witnessed a unique kind of broadcasting the mass murder of thousands, live on television. As a lesson in the pitiless cruelty of the human race, September 11 was up there with Pol Pot's
Mountain of Skulls in Cambodia, or the skeletal bodies stacked like garbage in the Nazi concentration camps.

An unspeakable act so cruel, so calculated and so utterly merciless that surely the world could agree on one thing - nobody deserves this fate. Surely there could be consensus: The victims were truly innocent, the perpetrators truly evil.

But to the world's eternal shame, 9/11 is increasingly seen as America's comeuppance. Incredibly, anti-Americanism has increased over the last year. There has always been a simmering resentment to the USA in this country; too loud, too rich, too full of themselves, and so much happier than Europeans -- but it has become an epidemic. And it seems incredible to me. More than that, it turns my stomach.

America is this country's greatest friend and our staunchest ally. We are bonded to the US by culture, language and blood. A little over half a century ago, around half a million Americans died for our freedoms, as well as their own. Have we forgotten so soon? And exactly a year ago, thousands
of ordinary men, women and children -- not just Americans, but from dozens of countries -- were butchered by a small group of religious fanatics. Are we so quick to betray them?

What touched the heart about those who died in the Twin Towers and on the planes, was that we recognized them. Young fathers and mothers, somebody's son and somebody's daughter, husbands, wives, and children, some unborn.

And these people brought it on themselves? Their nation is to blame for their meticulously planned slaughter?

These days you don't have to be some dust-encrusted nut job in Kabul or Karachi or Finsbury Park to see America as the Great Satan. The anti-American alliance is made up of self-loathing liberals who blame the
Americans for every ill in the Third World, and conservatives suffering from power-envy, bitter that the world's only superpower can do what it likes without having to ask permission.

The truth is that America has behaved with enormous restraint since September 11.

Remember ... remember ... remember ... the gut-wrenching tapes of weeping men phoning their wives to say, "I love you," before they were burned alive.

Remember those people leaping to their deaths from the top of burning skyscrapers. Remember the hundreds of firemen buried alive.

Remember the smiling face of that beautiful little girl who was on one of the planes with her mum.

Remember .... remember ..

And realize that America has never retaliated for 9/11 in anything like the way it could have.

So a few al-Qaeda tourists got locked up without a trial in Camp X-ray? Pass the Kleenex ..
.
So some Afghan wedding receptions were shot up after they merrily fired their semi-automatics in a sky full of American planes? A shame, but maybe next time they should stick to confetti.

AMERICA could have turned a large chunk of the world into a parking lot. That it didn't is a sign of strength. American voices are already being raised against attacking Iraq -- that's what a democracy is for. How many in the Islamic world will have a minute's silence for the slaughtered innocents of 9/11? How many Islamic leaders will have the guts to say that the mass murder of 9/11 was an abomination?

When the news of 9/11 broke on the West Bank, those freedom-loving Palestinians were dancing in the street. America watched all of that – and didn't push the button. We should thank the stars that America is the most powerful nation in the world. I still find it incredible that 9/11 did not provoke all-out war. Not a "war on terrorism." A real war.

The fundamentalist dudes are talking about "opening the gates of hell" if America attacks Iraq. Well, America could have opened the gates of hell like you wouldn't believe.

The US is the most militarily powerful nation that ever strode the face of the earth. The campaign in Afghanistan may have been less than perfect and the planned war on Iraq may be misconceived.

But don't blame America for not bringing peace and light to these wretched countries. How many democracies are there in the Middle East, or in the Muslim world? You can count them on the fingers of one hand – assuming you haven't had any chopped off for minor shoplifting.

I love America, yet America is hated. I guess that makes me Bush's poodle...

But I would rather be a dog in New York City than a Prince in Riyadh. Above all, America is hated because it is what every country wants to be -- rich, free, strong, open, optimistic. Not ground down by the past, or religion, or some caste system. America is the best friend this country ever had and we should start remembering that.

Or do you really think the USA is the root of all evil? Tell it to the loved ones of the men and women who leaped to their death from the burning towers.

Tell it to the nursing mothers whose husbands died on one of the hijacked planes, or were ripped apart in a collapsing skyscraper. And tell it to the hundreds of young widows whose husbands worked for the New York Fire Department.

To our shame, George Bush gets a worse press than Saddam Hussein. Once we were told that Saddam gassed the Kurds, tortured his own people and set up rape-camps in Kuwait. Now we are told he likes Quality Street. Save me the orange center, Oh Mighty One!

Remember .... remember ... September 11. One of the greatest
atrocities in human history was committed against America.

No, do more than remember. Never forget.

And still, up to this minute, the US holds back the use of the force it has to bear, in the slightest hope that it won't be necessary. NEGOTIATIONS with the enemy are ongoing. Meanwhile, the hardliners continue to plot and prepare how they will make sure life is miserable for the Iraqi citizens wen they are thrown out of power. Who is the brutal, bloodthirsty one?

Very interesting article.

In the history of the United States, never has that country been so unpopular as it is now. Never did the world felt so sick, so revolted, with the unilateralism of a nation that has leaders that believe that they run an empire.

I am sure that in the next days, if the news about the killing of civilians get bad, if the public opinion become appalled by the strength of the American attacks, I am sure that EVERYBODY will remember 9/11. Everybody will be forced to see those pictures, the American TV's will certainly show the details of the sounds of people getting smashed on the ground.

Ten thousand civilians were killed in Afghanistan by the US troops already (not including the Taliban, as they are not people)

10.000 silent voices.

...There are no pictures...

there are no phone calls.

there is nothing, absolutely nothing.

When America kills, America kills as silently as possible...

Oh for f..ks sake .. where is my tissue .. the comparison is as ludicrous as it is offensive.

I feel absolute sympathy for the victims of the Sep 11th terrorist attacks but to liken them to the concentration camps makes a mockery of the holocaust.

The casualties were so high on Sep 11th BECAUSE of a variety of reasons including negligence of those who built the buildings and those who didn't advocate evacuation immediately.

I know it's easy to comment in hindsight and it does not minimise the horror, anger, sadness, fear etc caused by the attack .. but this whole "same as the holocaust" shite has just gone to far.

That article is simply ludicrous pro-american rubbish full of contradictions and hypocrisy.

Uh...the 11 MILLION people died in the Nazi Camps. 3000 people died in the WTC. Pol Pot slaughered like 33% of the Cambodian people - probably a few million. There were worst atrocies that were not directed at America. Like Stalin. He killed like 20 million Soviets.

If you're going to quote the passage, please don't omit the first part:

"As a lesson in the pitiless cruelty of the human race, September 11 was up there ...."

The author doesn't suggest that the number of dead is "up there" with pol Pot or the Holocaust, but that the deed itself is equally cruel.
I find no issue with the author's premise.

Oh, and please don't blame the Twin Towers' architect.

ADG,

Your comments are so callus and so utterly without thought I find it hard to come up with a word for you. We are to blame for building a building too high and we didn't have a proper evacuation plan. You are a complete idiot, what little respect I had for you is completely lost.

You have such obvious hatred for the USA it bleeds through everything you say. I now put you right up there on the throne with idiots such as Toner and ILS.

Toady,

even with the inclusion of that portion of the statement it is still ludicrously inaccurate. The WTC was a single attack on a single day, and were not a continued and concerted effort as the others were.

It's just stupid to draw any sort of conclussion ....

Your comments are so callus and so utterly without thought I find it hard to come up with a word for you.

You know, I don't give a shit. It's simply ludicrous to try and compare the WTC attacks with the holocaust of the polpot regime .. if you can't see that then there is a word for you that i'll refrain from using here.

We are to blame for building a building too high and we didn't have a proper evacuation plan. You are a complete idiot, what little respect I had for you is completely lost.

You know, I tire of this simple minded take no responsibility attitude .. the WTC's were badly built, that has been admitted. The decisions by the Port Authority officials were the wrong ones, that has also been admitted. Don't come crying in here because you don't like the facts, because whilst your country might pussy foot around to save your sensibilities that attitude is stupid. The only way to avoid a repeat of mistakes in the future is to acknowledge them and to take measures in future to avoid them.

God forbid that an attack similar to the WTC should happen to you again (and lets be quite clear that I hope it doesn't ever happen in your country again), i'd hope that the mistakes made on the 11th Sep 2001 would not be made again. People would be evacuated, more consideration would be given to whether the buildings are at risk of falling etc.

You have such obvious hatred for the USA it bleeds through everything you say.

That's also rubbish .. but your "america is the best" attitude is what blinds you to the facts.

I now put you right up there on the throne with idiots such as Toner and ILS.

My care factor? ZERO. It simply shows your igrorance and arrogance.

Not to mention your lack of respect for the victims of the Pol Pot regime and the holocaust.

So true.

ADG,

the WTC's were badly built, that has been admitted

That's complete bullshit and you know it ADG. Today, humans build buildings out of metals which can melt if subject to fire.

Those WTC towers had to be INCREDIBLY strong to withstand fully loaded 767-200s crashing into them at 500mph!

The burning jet fuel is what brought those towers down, not the impact itself. Not even the best goddamn sprinklers ever built could put out burning jet fuel! There was nothing wrong with the designs of the WTC. But wait, just because Americans built means it was badly built, right?  Insane

You're posts within the last few days since the war started are truely astounding. You have no credibility anymore ADG, no one listens to you, because we all know that there's no point to try and talk any sense into you anymore. I don't even know why I'm wasting my time typing this up anymore. You're just another person on this earth who simply doesn't get it, and never will.

I'll leave it at that for now.....

Take it up with your own government and the architect who built the building .. I'm just passing on the information.

Those WTC towers had to be INCREDIBLY strong to withstand fully loaded 767-200s crashing into them at 500mph!

Well that's pretty idiotic because anyone with a basic grasp of physics understands that most buildings would have reacted in the same way .. until the WTC buildings fell down of course.

The burning jet fuel is what brought those towers down, not the impact itself.

Geez, wow! you're good ....

Not even the best goddamn sprinklers ever built could put out burning jet fuel! There was nothing wrong with the designs of the WTC.

Yes there was and the architect himself admitted it .. a lot of other countries use more concrete in their buildings. Concrete doesn't react like metal does when heat is applied to it.

But wait, just because Americans built means it was badly built, right?

You know you really should get past this hatred of non americans, it blinds you to the facts .. go and have a look at the facts. The WTC buildings were poorly built and they collapsed when other buildings may not have .. The buildings were designed to survive the hit of the planes and they should have. But when they make broad and sweeping statements about a building surviving the hit of an airplane you think they'd take into account the fuel as well.

You're posts within the last few days since the war started are truely astounding.

What rubbish.

You have no credibility anymore ADG, no one listens to you, because we all know that there's no point to try and talk any sense into you anymore.

Good try, but you respond so therefor you read which is the internet equivalent of "talking", seems you're the one with the hypocrisy issue. After all, you're the idiot supporting the stand that the WTC was "like" the holocaust, and that .. is the most ludicrous thing i've heard in a very long time for so many reasons.

I don't even know why I'm wasting my time typing this up anymore. You're just another person on this earth who simply doesn't get it, and never will.

oh boo hoo .. have a cry .. you're the one who really has no idea .. another "i am always right" individual who really ought to try and enter the real world sometime.

I'll leave it at that for now.....

Please do until you get a better grip on the facts and your temper.

You know .. only an idiot would argue that the handling of the WTC disaster was acceptable .. it was horrific and many people died and IN HINDSIGHT things could have been done a lot better. Your stupid attitude applies BLAME to individuals, not mine. The ability to accept that errors were made will go a long way to ensuring that (god fobid) if it ever happens again more lives may be saved.

Lucky the authorities aren't like you or we'd see a repeat of past mistakes time and time again.

What an idiotic thing to say TechRep. It just goes with my belief that you are one of these people who lack the capacity for rational thought at all.

As usual, rather than addressing the issue you have found a change of topic and attempted (but failed) insult more appropriate. That indicates clearly that you have no realistic objection to the statements other than you don't like them.

Not a reasonable reason sorry.

Perhaps you should consider staying out of issues you so obviously know nothing about?

Anyway, this thread was originally about a letter in support of the US. The letter talks about supporing a staunch ally. We should never be driven by blind support of a country because of past performance and relationships. The US considered Iran an ally once but we know that regime changes and foreign policy can change things.

America is taking alot of criticism these days and in my opinion it is deserved. I really wonder how this will all end. Will the US economy be affected negatively? I've already heard plenty of that "you're with us or against us" talk to realize that economic relations with non-coalition countries may suffer. I don't think "coalition" countries like Bulgaria or Romania can offer the US much in that respect.

Anyway, I respect the governments of the world who are against this war. I am proud to say that Canada fought side by side with the US and others in desert storm and continue to be proud to say that Canada is officially staying out of this latest illegal Iraqi conflict.

I never knew that buildings should be built to withstand the impact of 350,000 pound jets being flown into them by some extremist bastards. I guess we Americans really are stupid to not plan for that in advance! What were we thinking? You should be ashamed of yourself for blaming the deaths of 3,000 innocent people on the architect of a building which had already withstood one terrorist attack. Why don't you go to Afghanistan and meet up with some Al Qaeda members who share your beliefs.

So i'm told  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

America is taking alot of criticism these days and in my opinion it is deserved.

You only need to read the responses in these threads at the moment. We were seeing complaint after complaint about this site being anti-american but when it really comes down to it those complaints are not only baseless but the opposite actually exists. Not only are we seeing complaint after complaint about the french & the germans the vocal minority of americans (and we all know who they are) are out there attacking anyone who doesn't agree with them.

It's sad that they need attacks, bombs, wars etc to feel good about themselves.

I don't think "coalition" countries like Bulgaria or Romania can offer the US much in that respect.

Why is it so bad for a country to be against this war? AFAIK not a single country that is vocally against the war is taking any steps to assist Iraq or to damage the allied war effort. Surely they are then entitled to their opinions?

I never knew that buildings should be built to withstand the impact of 350,000 pound jets being flown into them by some extremist bastards.

Why is it that the more vocal of the Americans are having problems with this simple concept? This issue has been addressed, what part of the address above are you having a problem with exactly?

What were we thinking?

You tell me, I have no idea .. ranting without addressing the issues, taking offensive rather than lessons .. I have no idea what you are thinking.

You should be ashamed of yourself for blaming the deaths of 3,000 innocent people on the architect of a building which had already withstood one terrorist attack.

Not only didn't I do that, I have said that above. Perhaps some calm reflection might be in order?

Why don't you go to Afghanistan and meet up with some Al Qaeda members who share your beliefs.

Why don't you calm down and stop acting like a child?
