UN has failed on Iraq: Hill
Defence Minister Robert Hill says the UN Security Council has failed the world on the issue of Iraq. Listen to Audio
The United Nations Security Council had failed the world over Iraq, Australian Defence Minister Robert Hill said.
He said the "big five" members of the Security Council - France, China, Russia, Britain and the United States - would all have to rethink their attitudes because the deep divisions between them had led to the current war.
"The Security Council has failed the world community badly in this instance," Senator Hill told reporters in Brisbane.
"They passed 12 years of resolutions (on Iraq) but it wasn't prepared to enforce them.
"That sends a very unhelpful message to dictators who develop weapons of mass destruction and are prepared to use them on their own people and on their neighbours."
Senator Hill said the five permanent members of the Security Council needed to address the issue for themselves so that they could avoid similar failures in the future.
"If as a result of them being so deeply divided the Security Council is not going to meet its international responsibility then I think that's a loss," Senator Hill said.
As UN Secretary General Kofi Annan cancelled a tour of Europe to discuss the postwar reconstruction of Iraq, Senator Hill said he did not believe the UN was up to the task anyway.
"The UN after all is only the collective attitude of its member states and we believe that they are not ready to take up the challenge," Senator Hill said.
Australia was prepared to play a part in the reconstruction of Iraq in specialist areas such as agriculture, but would not commit a military force to any peacekeeping role, he said.

What a bunch of rubbish: because the deep divisions between them had led to the current war
The only thing that led to them were: Iraqs hassles in bothering to even try and comply with various resolution & the US' inability to listen to what other countries had to say. The deep division appeared the day where it became apparent that the US was going to go to war no matter what the UNSC came up with.

CPH-R, you are wrong.
I don't know senator Hill, but he is right pointing out that a UNSC, which had stood united behind its own resolutions during twelve years including Saddam's last chance #1441, might have convinced him to obey to the resolutions making the war unnesessary.
Maybe he would not have obeyed anyway. We will never know.
All we know is that part of the UNSC being serious about the resolutions, and the other part chikening out when the final one had to be carried out, that did not convince him to obey.
Then there are of course the people who think that 12, 24 or 36 more years of "inspections" would have done any good. They are not serious people.

There is no comeback when someone posts an inflamatory statement that is nothing but lies. Yyz is simply allowing his dislike of someone to override any common sense he may actually have.
He appears to be engaging in some type of petty tantrum at the moment, running around the forum posting one liners that are for the most part simply lies perpetrated by him in an attempt to incite a flame war. He hasn't figured out yet the the only person being irritated is himself as clearly indicated by the quantity, and lack of quality of his posts.
But hey, if he wants to run around the forum proving beyond all doubt how petty he is then who are we to stop him?

Oh now that is funny .. all over you yyz? I suggest you have a look in the forums, you'll clearly see it's you who has the fetish for all things ADG.
And by the way, unlike YOU those other people you mentioned have actually put substance in their posts. You appear to be just posting "me toos". I notice that some of your posts are being deleted so obviously someone is suggesting deletion which leads me to think that whilst you're not pissing me off, you're pissing someone off.
