I have been thinking about what I am going to do educationally after I finish up my master's degree in December. My advisor and others keep telling me that for my field a Ph.D is the desired degree for the higher level jobs that I would want. Now I am toying (and not even serious toying) about the idea of getting a JD. But I would only do this if I could get into JAG... don't really care about which branch, though I would pick the Navy b/c the dress whites are pretty nice looking.
Now I have checked out the various JAG websites for the Air Force, Army, and Navy and they were not too clear about the program. What I would be interested in, is getting into the program where they pay the costs of law school. And this is where things get fuzzy. It is not clear whether they only pick upcoming or recent law grads or those who are law school bound. I wouldn't want to do a ROTC scholarship to pay for law school, then end up not making JAG and having to do my 4-6 years of service in a field that I may not like. Another concern is that by the time I finish law school, JAG school and do my service I will be around 35/36 yrs old... which puts me back into the private sector later than I would like. Over that time period I could have worked 4-5 yrs, gone back for my Ph.d, and be out working again... likely at a high level position.
So does anybody know anything about the JAG program and getting in and any details like that?
If I wasn't so busy with final papers and exams I might actually make an appointment and go talk to some people... the Army JAG school is located on my campus.

Just a thought, but why not try and be a JAG for a reserve unit? The 174th Fighter Wing is the Air National Guard, and my dads good friend and co-worker is the JAG for them...he works as the JAG and he is a lawyer for my dads company.
