I have only used it a few times when I was about 12-13 years old. I'd walk 1.5 miles to the bus stop and catch the bus to the Bus HUB at a local shopping area. Then, I'd catch the bus to the Mall... It never was all that great since the busses were dirty and the "layovers" at teh Bus HUB were longer than it would take me to walk...
I also use Public transportatioin in these Cities ( you pretty much have to)
New York (BUS, Subway)
Washington DC (Bus, Subway)
Lyon, FR (Subway, Bus)

Every day!
My car is currently on loan to some friends - it's no use in Brussels, London, Paris, &c. In these cities driving (and finding a parking space) is too much hassle, and the public transport is fairly good anyway.
It might be more practical to drive if I regularly had to work on a site outside the centre, or in a smaller town.

I live about 20 miles from work and the city does provide commuter buses from the business districts out to the suburbs. However, it cost $3 each way, so I use it maybe 5-6 times a month, just to get a break from the hour commute (each way).
They started on light rail construction here but the one proposed for my side of town probably won't be finished for another 10 years. By then the fare should be lower and I'll use it more often.

Every day practically. My school is located some 60km from home so i first take the bus into Gothenburg city and then change for another bus that takes me to the school. I spend somwhere in the neighborhood of 3hrs on a bus ever school day. I have nothing against it though, it gets me there far cheaper than if i'd taken my car and i can sleep on the bus with some sweet music in the MD Walkman to go along.

I use to take CTA (Chicago) buses and trains every day to get around until I bought my car. Now I'll take the L every now and then when I'm going downtown. Once I move out to the suburbs though, I'm going to be relying more on my car to get around.

I use it when going to downtown St. Louis for sports events at Saavis Center or Busch Stadium. It doesn't go all the way out to where I live, but end up driving to the airport and riding downtown from there. It's easier than parking downtown and less of a hassle to get out at the end.
I ride the elevated monorail in Jacksonville occasionally. Very few ride it though as it is essentially worthless.
Other than that, just when in cities like NYC/Washington/Chicago/Boston/Atlanta where it's easy to get into town from the airport. MARTA in Atlanta is probably what I use the most as it's relatively convenient for everywhere I go in Atlanta or puts me to where cab ride isn't very expensive.

What choice do I have?
When I want to go shopping to Malta, I have no choice but to take bus number 25 from Victoria Bus Terminus to Mgarr Harbour, then hop on board one of the ferries and take bus number 45 or 645 from Cirkewwa to Valletta or Sliema respectively. The ferry is the best part, they're all less than five years old. The buses... erm anywhere between one year and sixty years, depending on how unlucky you get!
One means of transport I actually enjoy is Prague's Metro. Fast, convenient, efficient. I wish we had something of the sort in Malta!

Every chance I get! Our problem here is C-TRAN (Vancouver) makes connections with Tri-Met (Portland) in downtown Vancouver except for the C-TRAN express busses which only run for a few hours Monday thru Friday. I am looking forward to my trip to YVR this summer when I can try navigating TransLink.

I do nearly all the time. It takes me 50 minutes to get to Midtown Atlanta from where I live by bus and subway versus 1.5 hours by car.
I take the GCT bus from Gwinnett County and sleep on the 35 minute ride to downtown via HOV lane. Then I transfer at Peachtree Center to MARTA subway and I ride north three stops to Midtown. Then I take another bus to get to my final destination. It's hard to believe that taking three modes of public transportation is 40 mintues faster than driving and getting stuck in traffic. The buses run exactly on time and they are frequent enough that I never have to wait for one. The subway runs like clockwork and get nearly the SAME Train Operator all the time! That's how close they stick to the schedule. And even thought GCT and MARTA are two seperate companies, it's free to transfer between systems.
Toal cost:
From my home to Midtown: $3.00 (GCT express bus fare)
From Midtown to my home: $1.75 (MARTA fare)

I walk out of the appartment block and accross the road to Cityrails Redfern station which is Cityrails second biggest hub station with 12 platforms (I think) and stand at the top of the station and watch and see which Circular Quay bound train is coming first - then a quick bolt down the stairs and 3 stops - 7 minutes later I'm at work.
The trains are coming about 1 minute intervals in peak.
Circular Quay station is actually where my old ferry stopped - so I just walk accross the road to the building.
Weekly ticket (which gives you unlimited trips on the route) is $17.00 AUD.

The high speed boats are the new ones, They are still under construction.
The theory is that they want boats that then can do runs up and down Lynn Canal into Sitka on day runs only. That changes the type of crewing you need since you aren't overnight running the boats.
Most on my runs where on the Tustumena down the chain.

I average public transport use about once a month. Usually to go into the city. Our suburban train network is ok, not great doesn't go to enough places.
The service is every half hour so a quick look at a timetable before heading out is a good idea. Service is fast, trains are clean and they are right on time, so you can't be late and still catch it.
I like Sydneys train system, goes to more areas and is very frequent in the inner areas, so no looking at a time table required, also there is a connection to the airport which is very useful, which I can use this weekend.

So did your sister want her place back and you got kicked out.
Superfly your profile says you are a Transit Consultant, so do you get free travel. The BART system is as good as I expected it to be, travelled on it last year.

There's only a few times I'll take the bus.
1. When I'm going out to the main shopping area. I cant roller blade or walk back six miles with any stuff I buy. And I dont own a bike.
2. When I need to get to the ice arena with my big ass hockey bag. While its only slightly more than a mile away, there's a bus that picks me up a block from my dorm and drops me off right in front of it.
3. If we're having a nasty winter storm, I'll most likely take the bus to wherever I'm going.
Here in Champain-Urbana, IL, we have a really good public transportation system in the CUMTD.

I have to get 3 trains to get to my University. One on the City Line to Liverpool Lime St (main city terminus), then an underground Wirral Line train to Liverpool Central, and then an Northern Line to Garston. All in all this takes about 40 minutes, if there's no problems, of course (there usually is!)
