In this week's Sports Illustrated's "Signs of the Apocalypse" segment, it has been reported that Austin, TX high school baseball player Bobby French has requested that the public address announcer introduce him as "Bobby Freedom" at games.

That is alternately hysterical and sad.

What a fucking idiot.

Well, I don't disagree....but I remember some basketball player turning her back on the US flag during the national anthem, and she was praised as a hero on this forum. Weren't they both just expressing their beliefs in public, you know, free speech and all that you guys hold so dear? Or do we have a double standard here?

Maybe he's related to B757300.

Because your sentiments mirror hers? We all tend to feel that way. When someone echoes our sentiments, we nod in agreement, even when they do something outrageous. But if they are opposed to our opinion, then even the silliest expression is greeted with the harsh remarks posted above.

If you really analyze these two scenarios, each youngster offended a group of people while expressing his/her opinion. But they received quite a different response from members of A.net.

Cheers,
Pete

Pete - I'd consider this man changing his name similar to the Danish man who refused to serve German or French customers, rather than the girl who turned her back on the national flag. Whilst I don't condone any of them, I think you are comparing the wrong events.

This guy is being just as Racist (?) as the man who owned the pizza place.

What a bullshit statement 777236ER. Your obsession with generalizing Americans, and now even states, is ridiculous, and you need to stop.

You don't have a fucking clue as to what you're talking about, and you always say bullshit like that without backing it up.

 Insane

NWA742, I have to kind of agree with him. There's probably not a more gung-ho, shoot-now-ask-questions-later state than Texas, and such bravado-idiocy if you ask me, is typical of that peculiar state.

To NWA742,

at least 777236ER is improving. He used to generalise all Americans, now he has broken it down to state level. In 2 years he may start generalising by city. In 5 years he might, just might, stop generalising!  Big grin

The reason I strongly hold against his statements is that I was born and raised in Texas. It really drives me crazy on all the bullshit stereotypes and generalizations we Texans get.......especially after Bush was elected. Mainly the ones on hicks and rednecks. Idiots who say things pertaining to that have no clue as to what they're talking about.

Now Alpha 1, I know you're a very intelligent person, intelligent enough to realize that generalizing a whole entire state (especially a huge one like Texas) is misguided, wrong, and unnecessary. This especially applies to foreignors like 236ER who openly generalize on the places they've probably never even been to.

Having lived most of my life in Texas, I probably know so much more about my state than 236ER does it's not even comparable, and I don't even generalize it, you know why? Because I can't generalize it, because no matter how you put it, it would be wrong in some way or another. Trust me on this one.

Regards

I need to stop? Woah. Texas has a bit of a reputation for far-out wacky ideas, not to mention that gung-ho bravado that seems to be emitted from it.

You don't have a fucking clue as to what you're talking about, and you always say bullshit like that without backing it up.

Ah yes Texas, the great state where anal sex is legal if you're straight but illegal if you're gay. The great state where 41.2% of executed people are black and 32.1% are white. The great state where there are no gun laws preventing juvenile possession of firearms, allows people to carry conceled weapons and does not allow cities and counties to enact ordinances to prevent gun violence.

Not to mention the site based in the great state of texas:

Yeah, I was grasping at straws there.

Bitching about me saying "Gotta love Texas", yet ignoring Alpha 1 calling him fucking stupid, and idiot and a jerk.

This especially applies to foreignors like 236ER who openly generalize on the places they've probably never even been to.

Foreignors eh?

Idiots who say things pertaining to that have no clue as to what they're talking about.

All this for saying "Gotta love Texas"...

Yes generalising is generally wrong (haha!). It was more of a joke than anything. Like it or not Texas has a bit of a reputation, at least over here. Wrong? Maybe. Then again, does France deserve all the shit it gets from Americans who've never been there?
