The Fast And The Furious: Questions

So I’m sitting at my favorite “Greasy Spoon” diner yesterday eating breakfast and nursing a hangover, when a bus rolls by. On the side of the bus is an advertisement for the upcoming movie “The Fast And The Furious 2”. (anyone else see the irony here?) This got me to thinking about the first movie, which I had only seen once, and quite awhile ago. The movie raised a number of troubling questions. Perhaps some of you can clear them up.

First, in watching this movie, one thing was crystal clear: this was the ultimate “Rice Rocket” picture (featuring only ‘souped up’ Hondas, Nissans, Mitsubishi’s, etc. i.e. IMPORTS only, see http://www.anti-rice.com). I do not recall from seeing this picture, any of the so-called American Muscle cars being featured. If the movie was about “speed” and racing, I just had to wonder why. Was the lack of-say ’69 Chargers due to any of the following:

Is it because that, despite all of the work being done to these Hondas, that a Muscle car will still “smoke” a Honda-and-thus-make the Rice Rockets look bad?

Is it because “Rice Rockets”, that rely heavily on graphics, wings, rims, tachometers, etc are what appeal more to what was presumably this movies target audience (i.e. 16-25 year olds) and that Muscle Cars are passé to the younger crowd?

Is it a safe assumption that plastic, fiberglass, nitrous, and graphics are “in” and steel, chrome, and raw horsepower are “out”?

In the course of the movie, one of the sub-plots involved the hijacking of big rigs and stealing the cargo to pay for the cars. Was this movie a sort of “stab” at truck drivers for being ‘slow’?

Why was the truck driver who pulled out a rifle and started shooting at the would-be hijackers portrayed as the “bad guy”?

Why would you attempt to run a truck off the road in a Honda? A Honda versus a Freightliner would be like a Styrofoam cup under a 500 pound mans shoe!

Why was it, that when they were being shot at, they didn’t back off? Knowing that they were unarmed, why did they continue to carry out the hijacking?

Most people don’t like “Ricers” to begin with. Most people see them as obnoxious, resent the fact that they drive those loud mufflers at 65 down a residential street at 2 in the morning, hate the loud music, and people that know how cars work know that making a car LOOK fast does not MAKE it fast. Clearly, this movie did nothing to improve the perception that many people have of the underground racing world, what with the connections to organized crime and such.

As a movie, it had all the criteria need to be “successful”: A flimsy, meaningless plot (which, incidentally almost mirrors that of the 1991 movie “Point Break”), a lot of eye candy, and little intellectual depth.

So I definitely thought it was kind of silly.

And now they’re doing it again?

Welcome to Hollywood (one of the main reasons I tend to be anti-SoCal).

And even worse, welcome to the mindless masses that cannot resist spending there scrilla on a movie forumlated just as you said above.

I saw the first one with some chick I visited in NH. Aside from the eye candy, I left a few intelligence points lower after having seen the flick. Oh, and Vin Desiel is perhaps the worst actor in the world. Of course the chick thought ole Vin was the greatest, so needless to say I could not wait to see my Red Sox baseball game the next day then jump on my flight back to Crapchester.

The acting in part 1 was horrible, I expect it to be the same in part 2. The only good part in part 1 was when the Charger got taken out of the garage. Part 2 looks bad as well, I saw a preview and there is a muscle car in there (an 02 Saleen) but it ends up being crushed by a semi. I used to race, before the original movie came out. Then when it did come out, all of a sudden we had a lot more dumbass's trying to race, they would not use their head and they would get the rest of us in trouble. But I am through with all of that, for 1 reason, everyone in Dallas buys a generic import, then they put that whinny ass exhaust on it, with some white lights and they think they could out run anything. They made racing not fun anymore. It's sad when I am driving home at 11pm and I stop at a stop light and a freaking 1.8L V4 125hp Honda Civic that has nothing more than a coffee can exhaust an after market air filter. I am not saying my car is a beast, but it has 225hp. So it's a waste of time. Needless to say I may sell my car by next summer and get an SUV. Then when I get out of school, I will get a 69-72 Charger or 70-72 Challenger. I love old American Muscle.

Matt D- I think FF mirrors Point Break. PB is one of my favorite movies. And it's sad when one movie copies another one.

I bet that the environment does not. I also love large V8's but i'm glad that not everyone drive around in one. For the sake of pollution.

I'm not trying to put the ol' american steele down here but i would say that a fairly nitroed or turboed up 1.8L Honda civic would outrun any muscle car out there. For startes, a Honda civic weighs roughly half of what a challenger or mustang weighs which in theory means that you must have twice the amount of hp in that muscle car than in the civic. Obviously it isn't this easy in practice since there are many more factors to count in. Transmission etc. (This goes especially for american cars which often have auto trannys which are NOT very good if you're gonna win a head on race against an equal car with manual tranny. Obviously a manual tranny requires a better driver but anyways. )

Mika- If everyone drove a classic car, then I would not be interested in them  Wink/being sarcastic Most people that drive imports don't put enough money for them to beat 300hp American Cars. If you put a blower into a Challenger, you would smoke any turbo-ed import. Hands down!

So far, no one has been able to answer any of my questions. I'm not really interested in a debate over what type of car can beat what. I asked specific questions related to the movie. Can anyone answer those?

Yes.

Is it because “Rice Rockets”, that rely heavily on graphics, wings, rims, tachometers, etc are what appeal more to what was presumably this movies target audience (i.e. 16-25 year olds) and that Muscle Cars are passé to the younger crowd?

Yes. Movie Makers know who spends the money and or how to target a well spending audience. In this case, warped minded younger people who get off on rice burners with rims, graphics, NOS, etc.

Is it a safe assumption that plastic, fiberglass, nitrous, and graphics are “in” and steel, chrome, and raw horsepower are “out”?

I would say its an assumption at best. I doubt raw horsepower will ever be "out", but the latest trend has graph, NOS, plastic and F-glass over steel, chrome, and the need for a mid-drive refueling truck.

In the course of the movie, one of the sub-plots involved the hijacking of big rigs and stealing the cargo to pay for the cars. Was this movie a sort of “stab” at truck drivers for being ‘slow’?

Uhm, who cares? And not for nothing, I have seen plenty of truckers on the I-90 who act like the Thruway is the old brickyard.

Why was the truck driver who pulled out a rifle and started shooting at the would-be hijackers portrayed as the “bad guy”?

Uhm, dude, its a plot. Who cares again. In this case, I think we were supposed to be identifing with the hijackers, they were the main characters, and we were supposed to like them, hence the Trucker coming off as the bad guy.

Why would you attempt to run a truck off the road in a Honda? A Honda versus a Freightliner would be like a Styrofoam cup under a 500 pound mans shoe!

Purely Hollywood. Anyone who likes to take a roadie now and then, knows that truckers do not get pushed around. Especially by some little ass piece of crap ricer.

Why was it, that when they were being shot at, they didn’t back off? Knowing that they were unarmed, why did they continue to carry out the hijacking?

Dude, its Vinny D. He is the most Bad Axe Mutha Sucka out there. No way "he" backs down one bit!

it's not just the imports that have poor tastes. allow me to demonstrate:

this AMERICAN muscle car - CAMARO - sports NITTO, Pirelli, Falken, and Bridgestone Tires according to his stickers. He must be riding on different tires on each corner. And yes, that's a VTEC sticker you see upfront. I guess those big engines aren't satisfying enough? Oh, that TRD sticker on the side-skirt? Toyota Racing Development...  Confused

I've seen the preview for this film and this time there appears to be a Ford Mustang in the film too. BTW the Twin turbo Supra feautured in the first film was not rice- those things are V8 killers and with a few mods on stock internals can pump out some serious horsepower. The Skyline GTR(Godzilla) will be in part 2 also- should be interesting because that car has some serious power. The R34 GTR VSpec has perfromance comparable to a Ferrari, it's in the same leauge.

Pos. Rate- You are right, the Supra and Skyline could both be considered Japanese Muscle. Funny thing is, the two best cars Japan made, are now discontinued.

I think the reason for the discontinuation of Skyline GTR production is Japan's strict emission laws. The straight 6 twin turbo(RB26DETT) isn't exactly a environmentally friendly engine which is probably why they are leaning more towards NA V6 engines now aka the 350Z.

a 1.8L civic outrun any muscle car? The question is, can my moped beat a Porche 911 Turbo on a 1/4 mile...haha

I think you have some problems my friend. The GTR in the same category as Ferrari? Dude, you can take an 2001 SVT Cobra R and kill a GTR, And that dosent come close to a Ferrari...I mean jesus christ, is the Sonata the same league as S500?

*gasp* yes there are idiots who soup up Camaros, this is due to the fact that their mothers didnt use birth control, it would have prevented these idiots from even getting ideas like this.

Furtherly, ricers on the streets think they own them....once, with my very own eyes, I saw what happened to a Eclipse when he was driving like a maniac and trying to pass a Ford F-350 whose driver was not happy...not pretty..
