Ever since the miricle of flight reached this great land, Us Northerners have taken to the air like ducks to water.
For many communitys throughout the north the bushplane and bushpilot are nothing short of 'a godsend'. Before the advent of flight the only way to reach many of these communitys was my boat in summer and dogsled in the winter.
Many communitys from Old Crow in the Yukon to Iqaluit on Baffin Island in Nunavut depend heavily on aircraft ranging form DeHavilland's rugged go anywhere haul anything Twin Otter to Boeing's 737-200Combi capable of hauling a number of passengers and their gear as well as several thousand pounds of frieght ranging from cars to toilet paper to bananas.
These aircraft are often the only way for these communitys to have fresh fruit and veggies and mail more than 2 or 3 times a year and newspapers that are a few days old instead of a few months old.
The bushplane and the bushpilot are the lifeline of the north. Nowhere else in the world is aviation so important.
It was those early pioneers in those early aircraft what opened up the north for the locals to recieve fresh food and other things, and for the rest of the world to come see this beautiful part of the world that few of us are lucky enouf to call home.
If it wasnt for aviation we wouldnt be eating fresh fruit and veggies, we would only recieve mail a couple times a year, the newspapers we read would be atleast a couple of months old, and the list goes on and on.
As the theme song in the movie "By the seat of their Pants" says...
"Way up north the cold wind blows, ya take a walk and freeze your toes,
and in the ocean, only iceburgs can be seen. Need some food or gas or nails, your lonely could use some ale, your leg is broke, sure could use a nurse,
In an Otter, or a Beaver you'll be happy to recieve her, bad things with her, without her may be worse...
Shes an ambulance shes a zoo she is everything to you althou she makes some scary noises and shes never warm n dry, shes a trucken our canoe shes a postal service too, and on top, of everything, she flies."
In the end, the north depends heavily on that absolutly wonderful mirical, we call flight.
So there you are, My salute to Aviation in the north.

5T, if you're really into it (you seem like that), know a lot about it, have a bit of writing talent and know where to get info and which to put in an article, you'll probably get something there! And trying doesn't hurt.
Walk together, talk together all ye peoples of the earth. Then, and only then, shall ye have peace.
