In civics class a few weeks ago i learned somthing very intresting.
We we talking about how our state (SD) actually has two types of governements. The 'regular' government (eg. Govenor, Lieutenant Gov., Sec. of State, Senate, House of Legislature, etc), and Tribal Government. I dont know exactly how we got onto this subject, but who knows. I found out that a tribe in SD has BILLIONS of dollars that the federal government is holding in an account waiting for them to take the money. Reservations in south dakota are usually desolate places. Poverty strikes everywhere. Its a well known fact about this too. They refuse to take the BILLIONS of dollars for this reason....
I'll first start out by telling you how they got the money. The fed. government wanted land. Well, it was reserved land for the N. Americans. The government game them two choices 'sell' us the land, or be forcefully removed. Well, the government just gave them maney, and said they had bought it. When really, they just MADE them sell the land to them. In lieu of this, they refuse to take the money.
I think this is really stupid on their part. They could better the lives of THOUSANDS of N. Americans with this money. They know they are never going to get their land back, why not take the money and make better lives for all of them? Build better school, hire police (since the city police dont have the right to do stuff on the "Res", so any offence the FBI has to look into), and improve life, insted of living in some of the worst poverty in the united states.
They seem like total idiots to me. Yes, they did get their land taken away from them unfairly a while back, but still. I do feel sorry for all the people who live outthere in the poverty, whith no choice. Gangs run rapant out there, there are alot of alcoholics out there too. They NEED to take the money before life becomes too unbearable out there, and who knows that will happen then. They need to forget how the money was 'given' to htem and TAKE IT!!! Make good lives, insted of making more bad ones whenever some kind is born into that type of enviroment.
Any one agree with me that they should take the BILLIONS of dollars? Any other thoughs/questions/concerns?

The Sioux didn't just get taken away from their land (as opposed to their land being taken away from them). They were also systematically slaughtered to further the cause of the white man's interests.
Not only have they been removed from their land, but they have to sit idolly by whilst the white man desecrates that land.
Mt Rushmore is the prime example of something which is a marvellous feat for white man, but which is distressing to look at for the Sioux of the region.
They belong to the land, rather than the land belonging to them (a white man's concept), and the land is being raped in such a way that it eats at the core of the indigenous culture.
Then you have that other "white elephant" project of the whacko who is intent on carving a MASSIVE carving of Crazy Horse out of a mountain...again....destroying land which the Sioux belong to.
And need I mention Kevin Costner, and how he has fallen out with the Sioux over his plans for the Black Hills?
Remember, the reservations are the brainchild of the white man; and I just don't think that white man will ever get the notion that "the land doesn't belong to them"...rather..."they belong to the land"; and to expect a people to live on a "reservation" when they have traditionally wander the land in search of food, good shelter, etc....is going to be the catalyst for the problems which were mentioned above.

The Indian way of life is completely incompatible with the American way of life. And dare I say that the American way of life is better? They aren't noble savages living in harmony with nature, they're cold, hungry, and fearful people who never developed modernity. It would be a gift to them to remove them from their nomadic existence.
Why don't they go back to the land? Why is it impossible for any indigenous people to go back to the land that they were pushed off?
Here's my answer:
Because the human genotype codes for us to like comfort. We can't go back because being civilized- living in the same place, using technology- increases our chances of survival so much that we fear returning to the native world. It's sad, but the next stage of human evolution is technology. And you can't go back from that. Instead we must embrace it.
Which nation would you have preferred? The rich one where people live in comfort and the land supports millions more humans in more comfort and higher chances of survival? Or would you prefer a nation where tribes of people scratch out an existence hoping not to die all the time, believing in animism rather than science to preserve their lives? I would prefer the former option. It would be better for humanity as a whole to ensure their comfort.
The means with which we dealt with the Indians could have been better. But when the last warrior died the Indians lost the last bit of moral capital that they had to get reparations. Now there is a break between Indians now and the ones who were beaten by the Cavalry. Now the only form of retribution that would be fair is to return the Indians to the same status as Americans.

If you want a deeper understanding, read Bury my Heart and Wounded Knee by Dee Brown. That book honestly made me cry. Dry at times, but very informative.
IMO, its a case of learned helplessness. They get screwed no matter what they do. Why try?
My grandfather was offered land in Maine b/c he's Indian. He refused. It was shitty land that wasn't worth a damn.
As for scratching out a living on a land that can't support it. Thats BS. Native Americans were doing pretty damn well before they got screwed by Europeans.
They also had honor, just a word in our language.
