The National Bureau of Economic Research has declared the recession over. Now if the job market would just pick up, I think people would be really convinced. Unfortunately there is still probably excess capacity in the economy so it still may take a while and there has to be a period of sustained growth before firms start hiring.

But no one wants to admit it. Because that would make the dems look like the blithering fools they are. The recession certainly is over.

Hmm... why does this remind me of when George W. Bush declared hostilities in Iraq over?  Smile

It ain't over till its over!

Sure, the recession is over-if you're a wealthy Republican, with stocks in the defense industry. For the rest of us?

No doubt things are somewhat improving but they are far from rosy. With the possibilities of more war too, I wouldn't bet on a big recovery anytime soon.

The NBER is more of an academic institution rather a political body. They do cutting-edge economic research.

Apparently they have seen several quarters of sustained economic growth. But like I said, if there is excess capacity in the economy, there will not be an uptick in employment or prices for a while.

For most of us, the recession will not be truly over until jobs are plentiful again and paychecks are getting bigger. That is bad news for GWB.

Only you are responsible for the boulder-size chip on your shoulder.

If it's bad news for GWB, in the long run, that's good news for the country.
