Hiya Guys,
Just been looking at the Trance music thread, and thought id start my own, as the other is getting too long! Who else on here has decks and is a fellow DJ? I bought a new mixer (Behringer) and a new set of Defected Records Slipmats yesterday. I have a set of Citronic PD1S decks and a Citronic VMX5 mixer, which I learnt on, and will be buying a set of 1210 Mk5’s once they drop in price a bit. Might buy some Mk2’s. I mix house for the most part, and have a very eclectic box, with deep house, funky house, soulful New York house, progressive house, US Garage, some very early UK Garage (nothing new – it’s a bad direction), banging house, chilled house, pumping acid house, disco funk, a few breaks, and also some chill out. I also have a lot of Trance that I learnt on, and still occasionally play for old times and grins. I don’t have much techno, just a couple of unmissable tunes on React, which is the brand you can trust as far as Techno is concerned. Only have one D&B tune – Inner City Life by Goldie on Metalheadz, and is a tune I often drop into a soulful house set, as the BPM is very similar and with a nifty bit of mixing, you can make it sound great, and its always unexpected, which is a good thing for a DJ to be. Likewise with QITip feat. Mos Def "Dont stop the Body Rock" which is one of the few hip hop tunes that I like and have. I do like to play modern funky house sets, getting slightly harder as it progresses, pumping by the end, and then drop something completely unexpected but wonderful rigth in the middle: it worked for me as a clubber, and when you are playing US house and tearing it up with tunes that the people you are playing to have not heard that much of, it at all, then you play something with a great break to start with, say Inner City's Good Life, or Let me show you love by K-Klass, just to completely blow it up - i just love it! :p
I think the reason i love DJing is because i love the music and I am also a mad keen clubber and again, House is my thang, and I tend to habit funky house nights as a preference. Like hard house nights as long as its not too hard, (Sundissential and Eddie Halliwell are faves), but my fave house nights are Serious @ The Cross in London, and also Space at the same venue. Top venue and always a wonderful crowd, up for it, knowledgeable, happy, not too over critical, and very appreciative. Hed Kandi @ The Arches, Brighton, and also at Pacha in London are top nights out. Basically it tends to be defined by who is playing – I have a shortlist of DJ’s that I really love, and will travel to see them play if need be. As a clubber, i dress well, and tend to wear smart t-shirts (Evisu, Diesel etc), nice jeans (same again) and a really smart pair of trainers (Acupuncture, Diesel, Puma etc). I do take E, and it lest me dance very vigourously from 12-6 non stop, and then i always go to an afterparty - either organised myself, by my friends, or by someone we know. If its mine, i play a set, or if its one of my mates who has decks, then perhaps i'll have a spin. GHB is the choice for the comedown for everyone i know, though all my mates supplement it with lots of Charlie, which i dont touch. K and Amps are not my thing either, and i only do GHB and some phat reefers to chill out when the time comes. When we get home from the club, never feel like chilling, and we go on a mission to the shops, so i eat my banana (i LOVE bananas when im pilling - you need somethign soft when youve been chewing your face off for the last five hours!) and also a bottle of Ribena, four of five big bottles of mineral water, rizlas, and probably Mixmag. Then we go home and keep on dancing till lunchtime, having talked some crazy stuff to mates, and any randoms we pick up, when the chillout kicks in, and we all crash on sofas. Most of my mates in London have wicked houses in posh areas, and most have either rooftop gardens, or waterfront balconies from which to chill and be chilled. I love playing tunes when ive been pilling - it always seems much more together and my sets are always better! So heres my fave House DJ's:
Erick Morillo
Dave Morales
Jose Nunez
Roger Sanchez
Stonebridge
Norman Jay
Richard F
Sandy Rivera
Nic Fanciulli
Cricco Castelli
Harry “Choo Choo” Romero
CJ Mackintosh
Todd Terry
Seb Fontaine
Danny Rampling
Ian Doyle
Rasaan Patterson
Kenny Larkin
Stacy Pullen
John Pleased Wimmin
So what do you guys play? Have you ever been paid to play, and where? How many of you still go clubbing now you DJ? How many people on here take Ecstasy? What types of music do you listen to, and do you listen to stuff you don’t mix? What are your fave DJ’s? What are your fave clubs? What I want to do is find out what everyone else is doing, and see if we cant all get together and have a good night out, or next time I’m in NYC, one of you guys can show me round, or likewise anytime any of you are in the UK. How many of you read mixmag?

I used to share a flat with Billy Nasty (a big techno DJ in the 90s) and my friend's girlfriend is Gayle San (again she was big in the 90's).
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

Blimey! Billy Nasty! That takes me back - hard techno!
I spent two hours chatting to Lisa Lashes on a plane back last time i was in NYC - took me two hours to figure out who she was! Nice Girl...

I was a small time DJ waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the 1990s!
I did a few clubs here in San Francisco (circa 1995-98) when I was in college to earn a ew extra $$dollars$$.
I mostly did private parties, birthdays, barmitzvas, weddings, frat parties, sweet 16s and other misc. crap. I liked those better because I'd be done by 8:30 PM and still have time to go out and do my own thang!
They also paid just as much as the clubs.
There are a few other DJs here at Airliners.net:
Trekijedi (sp)
Frequence plus
BTW; I ONLY used two Technics SL-12000MK2 turntables!

Well see the whole technics thing is a bit sad. I want a pair because they are the finest decks in the world for what i play. Problem is, people buy them for DJing where there are better decks around for what they want, and you get a whole load of teenagers buying 1210's to learn on - fair enough, but why knacker a perfectly good set of decks in the pursuit of something you may only have a passing interest in? I think i am ready for a pair of decks that can take me to another level now, and I do much prefer 1210's to the ones ive got whenever i can play them i do, but i know a load of people who mix drum n bass and stuff, where the new vestax is a superior deck. Big, silver and ugly, but an absolute dream to play with, and well worth the money, but people wont buy them becasue they are vestax. Stanton make a range of decks, and their high end stuff is excellent, same with citronic- their new top range deck is a really fine piece of kit, and a definate contender for technics rival. Its a bit like cars.
If you are just starting out, you need a Peugeot 106, or a saxo, or a nova. Theres no point learning to drive in a Skyline, Impreza, or Mitsy Lancer Evo 7 (Drool!) - you might look good but theres no point if you keep stalling it, and have problems with the advanced traction control, and the amount of power that you are not well trained enough to use properly. So buy a nova, and cane it round, make all the mistakes and become proficient in driving well. Then buy a car that will take you to another level and allow you to do stuff that you can before. Buy cheap decks that are simple but effective, then move on to 1210's once you feel confident enough to do them justice.
Likewise, if you are need a four by four like a Jeep Grand Cherrokee, or Range Rover, then why buy an Impreza or Skyline? Yes they are four by four cars, and yes they will probably cope with a good amount of what you want them to do, and for sure they will look good in your drive, but you cant push the boundaries and go PROPERLY off road, i.e: if you are drum n bass DJ, or do a lot of breaks and scratching, you can use 1210's - they will serve you well but may not be up to the kind of scratch violence you have in mind!
I am not disputing that the 1210 is a wonderful deck - and it is still pretty much the best deck for what i want it for. And, aesthetics are important to me! Damn the 1210 is a sexy looking piece of kit, for real! you can put blue LED's in them, and shove a chrome fascia over the top which looks even better, but even out of the box it looks like a supermodel. My mate has got a VW Camper van, and has two Mk2's inlaid in the worktop in the back - he put the red steel fascia on it, and then painted the van the same red, put in new seat covers and carpets (similar red) and stuck chrome five point alloys on it - hes got a 800watt sound system in the back! (Got a CD player for when we driving - worktop vibrates too much to play tunes when on the move, but thats why God invented beaches and laybys!

I am going to get me a pair of decks and a mixer as soon as my wallet permits me (does it ever really permit anything?). Anyways, i'm looking at a pair of Numark TT1650's (direct driven of course) and a Behringer DJX400 for a mixer. It would all cost me around £400 with shipping from the UK and everything. I'm gettting it from http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk simply because the prices of DJ gear and electronics in general here in sweden are RIDICULOUS compared to thoose in the UK. Can you believe that i can get 2 of the above TT's in the UK for the same price as i get 1 single f*cking TT here?? It's unbelievable.
In the past i used to listen to trance only but iv'e kind of grown into house more and more with time. I find any kind of house music much more "danceable" than trance. I can't stand still when a good house tune drops! Even though i like both as much i guess. They're kind of serving their own purpose for me.

Mika,
Crack on mate you will never look back - i would seriously look at hard to find records in Birmingham for service and prices - they are the best and i buy all my vinyl off the web from there www.htfr.com - they really excellent. They do best prices on deck packages - they do the set i learnt on (see above) - for £295.00 all in including stanton carts, leads, headphones etc. Top deal! I would say that the Numarks you are looking at buying are very good decks too, but i found them not as nice as my Citronics - i would say the mixer is a good one too - so if i were you i'd sound them out about that mixer and a pair of citronics - they are best for house music - nice high torque motor, good solid build and good looks, also tough as old boots too - which is good if you are learning. Stanton do a good platform for that kind of price too - but id say the mixer is a damn good choice.

*Cripes* You describe a typical 12am - 7am (or 11am) Friday night / Saturday night out for me. (Sans GHB - Even though it's some of my friends choice.) Pass on the Banana too..
I used to do a small amount of DJ'ing in the 90's, mostly just helping a mate DJ at Raves here in Sydney. It was loads of fun as I was a tech head at the time.
Do you guys get those listerine *Pocket Packs* Oral Care strips? They are these little flat freaky green boxes of breath freshner strips that *everyone* seems to take with them to the club or party. Towards the end of the morning if you are silly enough to look on the floor the club is always littered with hundreds and hundreds of the freaky green boxes. I pointed this out to a mate and we were engrossed (as you do) with them for hours.

Iv'e heard of them before and i'll absolutely check em' out when i start collecting vinyls. Which should be any day now. I wan't to get a half decent collection of tunes the time i get the decks and mixer so i have something to play and learn on.
When are you next in the UK?
Don't have the slighest clue. Last time i was over there was in April when i went to London for a couple of days with some mates. Awesome city, defenetively gonna come there again. Didn't really have the time and know how for some serious clubbing though, we ended up at some of the standard tourist joints i guess *cough* Hippodrome and Equinox *cough*. We planned on going to Ministry Of Sound but never really got there in the end (this is the problem when going out with your friends that aren't really into the Trance/House scene. You have to compromise and go somewhere that everyone likes. That sucks!) We got many suggestion's from people to go to Camden Town for a good night out, defenetively gonna check that place out next time i come to the UK aswell. Iv'e heard much good about it.

Mika and MX5-Boy,
Next time you guys are in the UK give me a shout - i can usually get guestlist to any of the big nights you care to mention (MoS excepted), and would be delighted to show you guys round - we are very proud of the scene here, we worked hard to get it how we like it, and its one of the few things that Brits do better and bigger than anyone else.
Also, hard to find records are the one stop DJ superstore, and sell everything - decks, mixers, vinyl, CD's, boxes, cartridges/stylii, storage racks, clothing, books, DVD's/Videos, Slipmats, etc. They are cheaper than anyone else cos they have a price promise, and i would recommend buying your decks from them - the service is excellent, and the staff and very helpful and go out of their way to help you. Dolphin's website looks nice, but the prices are a little higher than i would normally pay - i'd buy your decks from HTFR and get the points on the reward card they do - you can redeem it against a whole bunch of cool stuff.

Oh and also, don't believe the hype about the Technics 1210s. They are overpriced and are not as good as some of the cheaper decks out (Numark etc). I would look at more technologically capable decks if I were you - the 1210's days are numbered IMHO. Getting a decent mixer is far more important.

Ryan,
Nobody else has made a deck that looks as good - and to be fair when was the last time you saw a busted 1210? Ive never seen one - they are hard as nails! It is a very steady, solid, easy to use, and very easy to judge turntable - i love them. That said, i think its good to have a bit of competition - i can remember not so long ago there was nothing even close to the 1210 at all - now its different - I like the Vestax VX2000 - they are huge decks - and i dont like the massive silver bloated look, but they are technically as good as, and for my money a more powerful platform, and a little easier to get used to than the technics. I like the top of the range Stanton as well. Technics are gonna keep selling the 1210 at the same price, as you have to bear in mind that whatever you pay for a set of 1210's - you will get a large proportion back should you need to sell them - this is not so much the case with the other decks, and i know a mate of mine who got £600 for his set of two Mk3's with Ortofons, and the blue LEDs - they were a couple of years old but had seen some mileage - but thats not a bad price at all to get for your decks - he was gutted to sell them mind.

Fantastic thread!
Answered most of the questions in the Trance thread, but Chris's description of a night out is eerily close to mine.
So, on a Saturday night, where will we be going? Shindig at Foundation, Newcastle. Voted the UK's best Underground club 2001-2002. http://www.shindiguk.com. What will we be listening to? Absolutely fantastic progressive house (Deep Dish was playing 2 weeks ago, Nic Fanciulli this week). What will we be wearing? Rokspun or Diesel Tee, designer denim on the legs, Diesel or Puma trainers on the feet. Evisu is nice, but perhaps a bit pricey....120 quid for a lycra long-sleeve tee! What will we be taking? Ecstacy. What will we be having? A fantastic time.
Afterwards, I love walking home in the 3-4am morning light, a cool breeze, ears still ringing, and gently grooving along. Stopping at the petrol station for a Diet Coke and an ice cream (along with all the other clubbers....hilarious scene). Getting back to the house, collapsing on the sofas and talking shit for hours.
Then, after Hollyoaks and a few fretful hours of sleep, it's time for Hed Kandi at Stereo, Newcastle on a Sunday night. I believe one of three places in the UK where you can hear Hed Kandi live. Have a bit of Charlie to get the heart started, then off to mix with the beautiful people. And maybe around 12 we'll drift down to the Pitcher and Piano on the Quayside, and glug smart continental lager waving to people from the balcony......it certainly ain't grim up north.
So, an A.net clubbers guide to the UK/NYC sounds a distinctly good idea!

EG777,
Mate you are spot on with what I’m talking about - Human Traffic tried very hard but missed some key points regarding the night out process.
Randoms: Isn’t E great? Don’t you just love it when you are dancing away with a massive grin on your face, and someone nearby says the ubiquitous line "You having a good night?" - Everyone says that! It’s the tagline! So you shake hands, or possibly hug, and dance along sort of together. Doesn’t matter if the person is male or female, or whether they are attractive or not - you just grin at each other and dance together. Then, a TUNE drops and you both go metal at the same time - you look at the other person and you both yell, "tune" and shove your hands in the air, laughing your head off. Then, you both make a "t" sign with your hands, and grin like you are deranged – then you probably hug. One of you goes away, and returns a few minutes later with a bottle of water for the other despite not knowing their name. You hug again. After a couple of hours of this you both turn to each other and decide its time to chill out for a bit, so you find a sofa and sit down next to each other. If the person is a woman you may give her a foot massage, or a cerebrum massage (where the back of the neck meets the skull – when you are pilling it is hot and very, very sensitive – rubbing/stroking it gently feels amazing and stimulates the cerebral nerve passages to the brain, making the Effects feel more intense and you will rush like someone is caressing your brain). If the person is a bloke you chat and smile and swap mobile numbers – you will then enquire as to the number of pills each other has consumed, and may take this opportunity to drop another. If the person doesn’t have any more left, you may offer (I normally do!) to donate one for the sake of being a legend. Conversation ensues, whereby you both make sweeping statements on something club related, and the other person agrees with much wild-eyed enthusiasm. The person will then depart, and whenever you see them later in the night you hug and enquire if they are having a good night. You may invite them to the afterparty, where you introduce said random to your mates, who are very, very interested in the new person, and after a few minutes one of the party will state aloud that they think your random is nice and that they are firm friends – they may even invite said random to your collective outing to Ibiza in the summer – nobody can remember the random’s name.
Post Club Mission: Mineral water is the way forward. You wander, grinning and slightly salty from the sweat that now makes your forehead seem tight – or is that the pills. The dawn happened a while back, and now, just after half past five, the world seems to be gearing up for the day ahead. People walk past you, and you jeer them when they do not respond to your very polite, and sunny “hello!” as they approach. The younger of the general public smile and nod at you, and some fleeting conversations are struck up, regarding where you’ve been, whether such and such DJ was good or not, and where the nearest tube/garage/24hour shop/toilet is. You turn a corner and the garage forecourt is liberally scattered with clubbers. Groups of ladies sit on the kerbside, and text people, smiling at their mates who are passing orders to the designated shopper who waits in the queue to be served at the window by the sullen looking Asian chap who speaks ropey English. The chaps walk round in t-shirts and their women walk round in the bloke’s jacket – everyone looks knackered, but very happy, and they all seem to have this glimmer in their eyes that says that they are not finished with the night out yet by a long way. News of the venue for the afterparty filters through from the ladies on the mobile phones sat on the kerbside. People ring other people to find out if any more pills/GHB/Charlie etc can be acquired – normally successfully. Every few minutes someone else returns from the queue with an Esso bag, or possibly more than one. This will contain:
Mineral Water – usually Volvic, and large litre bottles.
Ribena, Oasis, Lucozade or Red Bull in similar quantities.
Bunch of bananas.
Several Kinder Eggs.
Big tub of Onken bio-yoghurt – usually raspberry or Peach.
Opal Fruits.
King size blue rizlas (more than one pack normally)
Large pack of loose tobacco.
Pack of Marlboro Lights.
A large handful of chupa-chup lollies.
Pint of milk.
Three or four packets of Wrigley’s Extra.
Then your group will march off on a mission, past the curious early risers, to find the car. You periodically take in a deep breath, and it feels really nice. You sort of snuggle up into your jacket, as the cold morning air begins to cool you down, and your muscles begin their relaxation process (which feels lovely!). The person whose car it is gets into the drivers seat, then gets back out, and opens the boot. There is much discussion about stuff that really doesn’t matter, and this is normally held between the folks sat three abreast on the back seat, and the driver, plus one or maybe two others through the parcel shelf – someone asks if they can shut the boot because its cold. Various items from people’s bags are passed into the back, deodorant, chewing gum, mobile phones, and sweaters. Items of jewelry, mobile phones, deodorant, and whatever detritus that was on the back seat initially, are passed back to the boot. The driver sits in the front seat, the other guy sits in the front, and chooses something to put in the player – normally met with a loving chorus of “good call” and “I f*****g love this tune – who sings it?”. Someone produces a joint, and the car is quickly filled with the fragrant musk – the driver opens a window a bit, whilst the other guy contorts himself round to talk to the people in the back, whilst all keep an eye out for the Old Bill. The randomness conversation begins in earnest…
I think an Airliners.net Clubbers Guide is a blinding idea!

Again, the grizzled ryanb741 utters a word of caution - when I was at university I lived a life pretty much as you described above. I too indulged in 'stimulants' - 4 pills a night (rhubarb and custards no less - no lousy doves or dollars) and an eighth of freebase speed putty were the norm. However, one day it all went wrong - I completely lost it and had to pull out of uni for a year. The drugs had messed up my mind - all I heard 24/7 for 2 months after was the word 'Satan' over and over in my head. Eventually I got myself out of it, back into society and finished my degree and am doing alright now, but the year out was an absolute nightmare and I still get panic attacks to this day. So just do it once a week, just a bit of friendly advice that's all.

Ryan,
Thanks for the words mate - its important to keep stuff in perspective, and this thread was in danger of becoming an E Appreciation thread, which it was not intended to be. Personally, I am very aware of the dangers etc, and so i dont do speed, amphetamines, ketamine, base, coke etc whatsoever . All I do is four or five pills in a night-afterparty day period, and GHB in small doses - not averse to the odd joint now and again, but i do take it easy, and normally only go clubbing once a month - perhaps twice if I have the cash - basically body wont take it (dancing for six hours, taking drugs, and staying up for 30+ hours) so I think im ok - at least i hope i am. I never do pills from anyone other than my mate who never gets firsts of new batches, and always has experience of them - its safer that way - new batch may mean bad batch, and theres no way of telling what the MDMA has been cut with. Also I am then sure that i'm not getting poor pills - i only buy what my mate buys and he is a real connosseur! That means the risk is reduced (though i fully appreciate, not eliminated) and as long as i dont go mental and do it every week - i should really cut down on the pills and try to restrict myself to two, as thats pretty much safe - four is ok as long as it is spread out - i tend to buy five, and keep the one for if i meet a nice girl who i like who i am prepared to give it to - youd be amazed how grateful people can be!

Being more of a listener than a DJ (although I do have a mixer somewhere that I occasionally use for mixing between 2 PC's filled to the brim with music off all sorts), I can only add what I sometimes do when bored on the weekend.
In Copenhagen, there's a place called Vega, who have some pretty big ones every now & then (They had a "Respect is Burning" night waaaay before the "A night at.." & "After the.." hype hit the street), they alos have some club nights fairly often, with Okyo being the most popular. There's also Bassment @ Rust, and during the summer "Copencabana" on the harbor-front (complete with its own saltwater pool smack in the middle of the harbor) is popular during the day & night.

That depends on which one you're interested in
Okyo is currently resident at Rust, but they use Vega for the major DJ's, and it's midnight to 5 AM, with Bassment being from open from one to five. Okyo doesn't have a preset music policy, but is rather a place for Danes to have a "true" clubbing experience. Bassment is for the big bass people.
As for Copencabana, as far as I know, it's open from 11 AM 'till 7 PM with PappaHotel, the bar attached to it, being open from noon to 5 AM the next day Thu-Sat, and otherwise open from noon to 1 AM. Their style is mainly house and the likes.

A typical weekend bender would include one or all of the above clubs. Much prefer Arq or The Midnight Shift as venues although Clubsublime (Home Nightclub) is a fantastic venue. It all depends on which DJ's are playing what at whatever venue.
Friday night / Saturday Morning:
Get home from work sleep till 11:00pm - friends arrive on doorstep for pre-night out drinks etc - arrive at Arq @ 1am and party right until 7am sat morning before seeing who the morning DJ will be. If the DJ is good party still until 10:30am then leave completely shafted and head across to one of the early openers for a quick beer. Back to my place we go to chill out / sleep / come down / eat etc.
Saturday Night / Sunday Morning:
6:00 pm - showers all round, change of clothes, gossip about the evening before, try putting ourselves together for the night to come.
8:00 pm - big dinner at cheap local Thai restaurant with bottles of Aussie wine.
10:00pm - back to my place for pre party drinks and clothing check.
11:30pm - Arrive at Stonewall for a *check out who's about* and queue for a good 30 minutes to get inside. Wander around and say hello to a few people then wonder what the hell we are doing there.
12:30am - Wander down to the Midnight Shift and queue again to get in. Party hard till the music gets to us, about 5am, then wander out still wired and raid the 7/11 for snacks / junk to take back to my place. By this stage we're in our laughing mood and the taxi ride back to Newtown is full of laughter. Just get in the door as the sun is coming up - draw all the blinds - turn up the heat and put on some sets / tracks that we wanted to hear but were not played.
8:30am - Attempts to sleep.
3:00pm - Manages to rouse friends and encourage them to leave. Tidies up, attempts to eat food and does domestics.
Sunday Night:
9.00pm - Phone rings: "Hey, it's $10 Jugs of Cocktails from 11pm at the Shift.." Try to make as many excuses as possible but agrees to be ready by 10:45pm. Arrive at the Shift 11pm and hook into the cocktails, dance and party a bit more... 3:30am Mon morn look at watch and yell at mate "school night we gotta go home!". 4:00 am get home and actually manage to get 3 1/2 hours sleep before getting up and *floating* down to the Train station to go to work. [my mate manages to always chuck a sickie on a Monday when we do a three dayer.]
Monday:
8:30am - Arrives at work and makes strong coffee. Sits on trading desk and yawns / looks pale / is very quiet for the rest of the day.
I used to do this weekly, but finances not withstanding I do it about once a month now.
Hoo roo!
