Effort to recall governor qualifies for California ballot

Gov. Gray Davis became the nation's first governor in 82 years to face a recall election, as California's secretary of state announced Wednesday that a Republican-led campaign once discounted as improbable had qualified for the ballot.

Davis, a career Democratic politician who was elected in a landslide in 1998 before his popularity plunged amid California's energy crisis and budget deficit, must face the electorate in 60 to 80 days, according to state law.

Secretary of State Kevin Shelley said in a news conference that counties had reported 1.3 million valid petition signatures, "more than 110 percent of the required signatures."

Lt. Gov Cruz Bustamante said Wednesday he will schedule a recall election a day after Shelley's announcement. County elections officials have discussed Sept. 23, Sept. 30 and Oct. 7 as possible election dates.

As stupid as this whole thing is, this is what he gets for governing like a Republican. He has alienated his liberal base, tried to apease conservatives even though they would never vote for him.
The biggest jerk however is Congressman Daryl Issa. That little coward didn't want to risk losing his House seat to run against Gov. Davis last year. I guess he didn't have the confidence he would win in a regular legitamate election.

Gray Davis will just have to kick some a$$ again. The Democratic Party is united behind Davis. Issa is the only anounced GOP candidate but Arnold Shwartzinegar, Bill Simon and Richard Riordan are going to run too. The top vote getter wins. It's possible to have 99 candidates with all but one getting 1% and the winner getting 2%.

Now with this stupid recall, anybody can run. Hell I might even run! Big grin
All you need is 75 signatures and $3,500. I'd run as a Republican though.  Big grin

Hope you make alot of money...your taxes are going up!

Save your $3,500.00 and move to Vegas! It's a nice drive in a "73 El Dorado!  Smile

Clipperhawaii:
You are partially right.
Gray Davis really is governing like a Republican. He has pissed off liberals more than conservatives. He is Democrat in name only.
Now a drive to Las Vegas in a 1973 Eldorado would be cool!  Smokin cool

Check that 82 years.

Bill Sheffield up here in Alaska faced a recall vote but it never got out the state legislature. That was in 83 or so.
