I have lived in Reno since 1980 and have worked at RNO since that time, so please feel free to e-mail me.
Basically, I can tell you that Reno is MUCH smaller than Vegas, and certainly doesn't have the number of casinos and hotels. One of Reno's greatest advantages over Vegas is the proximity of Lake Tahoe (45-90 minute drive depending on which end you're going to).

I've been to RNO only twice, and both trips were a long time ago ('94 and '95). So I don't know what it's like now. But when I was there, I really enjoyed myself. My impression of Reno was that of a small friendly western town where you could also get all of the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas, without the heat. Both times I was there, the WX was mild and quite pleasant.
Both times, I stayed at the Best Western Airport Plaza Inn, which is (or at least was) a short 5 or 6 minute walk from the terminal. It was a very clean and comfortable place. And considering that and it's proximity to the airport, the $125 a night was very reasonable. And there was a coffee shop just another 5 minute walk away, down the street and under the freeway. I think it was called Cattin's, or something like that. Served the best cup of hot chocolate and bacon and eggs I'd ever tasted.
