US Country legend Johnny Cash has just passed away at his Nashville home. He was 71 years old. My condolences to his family  Sad , and we will all fondly remember the enormous contribution he made to the music industry, and in particular the popularisation of Country music.

I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

I wonder if Alaska Airlines will now take Johnny's picture off the tail of their airplanes.

Oh no...I loved this man!! His latest so-called "American recordings" are classics, no less!! He was one of the few, who really managed to cross the boundaries of country music and blend it into something new.

His wife died just months ago, maybe then he finally lost his strength to fight his illnesses.

God, I'll miss you and I'll never forget you, black man!!

See my post in the John Ritter thread.

I can't believe we lost either of them. Cash just came out with a new album/single that had me hooked, and prior to it's release I didn't evne know he was still alive.

His song "hurt" is the best thing I've heard on the radio for a long time, so moving, so deep, and with his passing it's all the more disturbing. I was just becoming a fan of his and now this. Man, he just won an award from MTV too but couldn't be there to accept it due to a stomach ailment, but I didn't think it was life threatening.

So sad. John and Johnny. I'll miss them both!  Sad

Another artist that will be deeply missed. His latest recordings were different from everybody else. "The man from Hendersonville" will be missed.

I've been a Cash fan for 25+ years and am still amazed at the number of artists from all types of music that credit Johnny Cash as a major influence on their own music. The number of artists who haved covered Johnny Cash's song is also huge and varied. Johnny Cash was also not afraid to listen to and enjoy a wide variety of music, listening to Johnny Cash's cover of Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat" is always a treat, now perhaps more than ever.

I true indivudual who I will miss

Yours,
IHadAPheo

I'll miss this man in black, too. And how ironic that John Ritter, son of country-western music (and film) star, Tex Ritter, who performed duo with Johnny Cash, also died almost simultaneously. A sad day for the entertainment industry and their fans...Jack

The lack of class by some is appalling. I was just going over some of the last works by Johhny Cash it some things come to mind.

First he wrote over 400 songs and had hiw works covered by thousands, the works of others he picked to cover himself a quite vaired from the above mentioned Nick Cave to on his last disc where he covered Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus, Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" On recent discs he also covered..songs by soungarden and others and had people like John Frusciante sit in for songs.

Not that many 70 year olds would be seen singing and performing with some of the above,.

An unbelievable legend whose impact on not only just country music but rock and pop who will be very sorely missed.

He was one of the first, if not the first, artists to have a hit on both the country and pop charts with "I Walk the Line".

This is incredibly sad...what a loss to the music world. At least now he is reunited with his beloved wife June.

I was fortunate to see Johnny Cash perform at the Carter Family Fold in the Hiltons, Virginia (about a 30 minute drive from where I live in back in Virginia) just a couple months ago...it was a celebration of June Carter's life who had passed on just a few weeks prior...He was in bad shape, but amazingly he still performed a few of his songs...

He will be missed...by many...

You know what, I brought this up on the John Ritter thread but it was a year ago that Johnny Unitas died.

Seems to be a bad day for celebrities all around.

I wonder how many of you have seen the music video made from Johnny Cash's version of the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt? It is a very powerful and poignant video, showing a collage of scenes from Cash's amazing life and musical career.

The final scene where he closes the cover over the piano keys will make you cry easily, to say the least.  Crying Indeed, the entire video is an appropriately fitting epitaph to truly one of the greatest musicians of the 20th Century, period.

Yes that video is quite touching, with June Carted Cash in the backround intercut with scenes from Johnny Cash's life, again how many 70 year old stars would do a cover of Nine Inch Nails and how many 70 year old stars would have their works covered by so many varied types of musicians today.

Yours,
IHadAPheo
